Terrible Ted Nugent 'Guitar Lesson' with Burst Content

Was in the Amboy Dukes at age 15yo, after 54 yrs is still rocking hard. How many of his contemporaries are still with us ? or as Ted said..... " got to the drooling, puking and dying stage thanks to drugs". " I looked at that and thought, I think I'll avoid that drooling, puking and dying S#@t "

The guy is a straight talker and lives life on his terms. Love him or hate him he has earned respect playing his style of Rock n Roll.

One of the absolute best exponents of controlled feedback there is. And has an in depth knowledge of the roots of RnR.

That's good to know. It makes sense that he has another gear in front of the camera. He seems to enjoy life (especially the outdoors) too much to be a complete a-hole, 24/7. Some of his 'other' activities have always been a hobby of mine too. I think I relate to those more than I do him being such a, "Guitar God." But I guess he gets grandfathered-in for being part of that much vaunted era.

But I'm no fan of the Blackstar from my one and only experience with one.

My first concert in 1976 was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow with Ted Nugent as the opener. My buddies had all been to concerts before so they knew to get there early and find a good spot to stand near the stage. We ended up about six feet back from the edge of the stage right in front of where Nugent (and Blackmore) were set up. When the curtains opened, Ted was standing on top of four columns of Twin Reverbs stacked on top of 2-15 Showman cabinets. It was loud as hell and Ted was a master of sustain and feedback with those Birdlands cranked up through the Twins. He really put on a killer show.

Saw Ted many times. In the early years he was more about the wildman image and less about the Mr Conservative image. He was great in the earlier years though i do not remember him playing anything but a Byrdland in those days. He might have, I wasn't into guitars much in that era. Later with the Damn Yankees he started to branch out with different guitars, notably the PRS stuff, again I do not remember any LP's. After the Damn Yankees he started playing LP's on stage. At least on a part time basis. To me his LP work doesn't sound all that much different than his Byrdland playing. Sure less feedback with the LP's but not by much.

Ted is one on my favorite players. I don't need the polical stuff, I am there to have a good time and leave that stuff outside tha hall. But, these days, Ted and politics are inseperable, so if you go see him, you will get plenty of that. Still, he can play the crap outta those Byrdlands.

Haven't seen Ted perform live in many years, but I have nothing but fond memories of his shows. From what I remember. :hmm

And I dig his well worn, carved up Les Paul. That thing is a beast. :yah

Ted liked to jump off a stack of amps back in the 70 when I saw him. He didn't slip when I saw him do it. Quite amazing to see

Good Lord, that sunburst Byrdland sounds unreal. It has so much more character that the 'burst.

I've lurked through here often and this morn just happened to notice this thread so I thought I'd register and comment. Anyone who posts on a couple of other forums may have seen me post the same info there.

I look after Ted's collection guitar collection (I'm not his touring tech) and have been doing pre and post tour work on them for past few years.

Yes, I'm the guy who recorded that FB Live posted by the OP.

Any questions about his '58 and '59 Les Pauls? I can probably answer them. He's posted lots of info about his guitars (which I've provided to him) on his FB page so there's no issue with me giving out details here.

I've actually played his '58 and '59 more than Ted the past few years. Lol.

Vic DaPra's new book will have some good pics of them both.

I'd bet it could be arranged for you to sometime see his '58 and '59. We've talked about you before --- he highly respects you.

Iirc, didn't you jam with him once in Vegas when he was doing a reality show around 2005 or 2006? That was before my tech time with him but I remember seeing it on tv.

What's the story on those age inappropriate knobs not the burst I wonder though.

He likes witch hat knobs.

Ive never asked but I'm guessing it's because it's easier to turn the pots on and off really quickly --- I'll admit I find that to be the case for me with witch hats

He's always manipulating his volume pots on his Byrdlands because if you don't the guitar will scream with feedback at the volume and gain he uses. The stock Gibson bell knobs just aren't as easy to hit with your pinky finger really quickly. The extra meat of the witch hat makes it much easier.

So I would guess he just wanted continuity between his LPs and Byrdlands.

Yes, I've searched his storage for the originals. Nope, I haven't found them. He's had the '58 and '59 since 1981 (iirc) so no doubt they are long gone.

I asked Kevin at Gibson Custom if they ever considered doing a run of one of Teds Les Pauls. He said he thought that they approached Ted about this some time ago. Do you know if that is a possibility? I'd love to see a run of the burst with him name carved in it. :yah

A little over a year ago I suggested this and got a contact name and that was it for my involvement but last summer I was told it was offered and Gibson declined.

Whether there's more to the story...I dunno.

Total geek-nerd question:
Maple top center seam separations are very very rare in real '58-'60 Bursts, although the ex-John McEnroe lefty Burst has a large separation between the tailpiece and endpin. IIRC the only other one I've seen is one of Ted's Bursts has a seam separation between the pickups...? Have you noticed it, and is it just in the finish or are the wood pieces actually separated? I totally understand if it's something best not talked about. Thanks

I honestly can't say I've ever really took great notice of it. Yes, I know that sounds stupid. Lol.

But it it's certainly not very deep or very wide.

This is is the best close up pic of it --- and it loses a bit of resolution because of Photobucket.

I met Ted briefly at a trade show in Vegas. He was a nice guy. We talked guitars mostly.
