There was an article this weekend in a local Pittsburgh paper about an online auction that is featuring a very clean 1955 Les Paul Junior.

The auction is closing tonight - and the bids are already up to $4,600 - which does not include a 10% to 15% buyer's premium and 6% sales tax (for PA residents).

It will be interesting to see what the hammer price is - and I wonder if some of these bidders are taking into account the additional fees?

I have no affiliation with this sale.

Here is a link to the auction site:

Dang that case is stupid clean too. Nice!

I know - it is a stupid clean case.

Can't tell if the handle is still intact though.

I'm thinking real hard about bidding on this - but the current bid price (with the fees) is already as high or higher than most of these are selling for today.

This one is in its own league though - and there doesn't appear to be any finish checking.

Post lean?

Yes - it certainly looks like it from the photos, and it's not surprising - as I'm sure you know.

One thing - despite the post lean - there doesn't seem to be any cracks in the finish or wood around the posts - which is a pretty common issue on these early Juniors.

Since its an early one. I`d be concerned about the neck angle. Action may have to be set too high.

I've owned quite a few 1954 and early 1955 Juniors and never had that problem, although - like many players - I'm not a big fan of the small frets.

54 next to a 56. Next pic, dot markers almost on the top. Considerable difference in height. TP almost down on the top as well on the 1954.

How much does a factory original spider carcass increase the value? :peace2

It would increase it a lot ... except that isn't a factory original. :wah
Wrong color to start with. I don't think that variety lives north of the Ohio River. :ganz

Good eye, but looks like it could have been a factory re-spider at some point. :hmm

I am learning about these old guitars. Is it not correct to worry about the neck angle/fretboard height?

I have rarely seen this as a problem with Les Paul Juniors.
But in general, this aspect should always be considered in almost any guitar. :)

I just bought a 1954 and although I do need to replace the posts there is no problem with neck angle or playability. Actually there is very little lean as well. I will gig this so I don't want to encounter problems in the future. GREAT GUITARS!! I have a 58 as well.
