THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

whatever.

Here is a pic of the cavity in #154 that you recently sold. It looks like I guessed correctly. It has the little disk shaped caps and they are wired with modern wiring (caps connected to middle lug on the tone pots). It would definitely make a noticeable improvement if the caps were connected to the lower lug. And it may make a noticeable improvement if the caps were switched to bumblebees........

It's true. Except for the bumblebee's...unless he means originals. The repro bees suck like the ceramic disc ones do. Get some Jensens.

Those are fairly minor changes. The 2009 pots are supposedly better too; but I don't think I would go that far unless I planned on playing it a lot & never selling. I am sure it sounds good stock. But imagine that it could sound better, more clear, with a couple of minor changes. I have two 03 braz R9s; they have the bumblebees, but they also had the modern wiring. When I played solos on the high E, B, and G strings between the 5th and 14th frets, many of the notes were drowned out (muddy). After changing the cap / tone lug connection, all of that went away & it was as crisp as it could be. Distinct notes were real easy to hear. It will make you appreciate those BB2/BB3 pups even more. I have a set of those (mine have double creme bobbins - from the "mistake" run in 2003) in my 09 R9 VOS (already has 50s wiring from the factory and bumblebees):

Those babys are VERY nice! The double whites look sharp.
That looks like a Rossington between them. You have me wondering now. I'm looking in the control cavity of my Ross tonight.

Not a Rossi, it is an aged Page #1, made about 2 years after the Rossi's.

One of the reasons these sound so good is the fact that Murphy yes did finish these guitars himself via his own nitro lacquer he had gotten years previous that according to him was the best of the best.I spoke myself with him for hours when he came to the music zoo in NY late in 09.He went into great detail in why these are his favorite run that he has done, and the fact that he actually painted these verses working with Gibsons factory glue prior is what made this run over any other Historic much more desirable overall from what he is always given to finish..
He stated that the lacquer from Gibson has changed drastically over the years and the Rossingtons are as close to getting what he called the real thing...
I do not own one of these so I have no agenda in boosting the ego of this run, these are Toms words and opinions:hmm
BTW one of the nicest guys I ever met in my life.......

#154 is now on the market check the gearpage, it used to be one of mine. IMO, its a nice one.

JimmyAce, you can pick it up for 8500, and change out those caps right after it hits your door:)

Can you please explain what you mean when you refer to Gibsons factory glue.

Interesting: That is very close to what Murphy told me as well.
If you are considering one - highly recommended!
Wonderful Tone monsters- that play very smooth and sound huge-
Murphy put an extraordinary amount of time and work into this run -
and they play/sound like nothing else I have tried.
The Rossi's enjoy a passionate following- for many a good reason-
Very sweet instruments indeed.
