I just bought a blonde 1977 Standard yesterday, and I wondered what other owners think of Standards from that era? We all know of the anti-Norlin opinions, but mine seems to be a lovely guitar.

It's my first LP with a maple neck - how does that affect the tone (if at all)? The frets show no sign of wear, but are very low compared to my VOS and 2002 Standard. Is this typical, or is it more likely they've been skimmed at some time ?

Maybe, if your focus is narrowed in on 1959. Of course if so, you are in the wrong forum. If someone can see beyond a fantasized ideal and with an open mind, judge a guitar on its own merits of playablity and tone, form and function, build and component quality or fit and finish, they might disagree.

Bottom line is that these musical instruments have proven their worth on countless highly regarded recordings and concert stages, clubs, basements, garages and living rooms. Arguably, some of the most recorded Les Paul guitar tracks were done by Norlin era guitars.

Their worth, utility and appeal are established and fact. What is not, is your credibility to make such a sweeping and absolute decree, period. I'll grant you that they may be held low in your estimation, and that your opinion stands on its own, for whatever it's worth. I disagree, period, exclamation point.!:hmm

Well, I jammed with the band tonight, and I have to say, WHAT a guitar!! Beautiful neck, and the bridge pickup snarls like a .... snarly thing! I'm really pleased with it.

Funny, I hear the anti-Norlin era talk all the time and from personal experience just shake my head.

Here's the one Norlin guitar in my present stable. To credit Gibson for the sound is only partially true -- the switching/wiring is custom and the PUPS are Duncans -- aJB and a `59. But even in these photos the quality should be apparent. The clean inlays. The finish -- now with almost forty years worth of "patina" but still gorgeous. And it virtually never asks anything from me.

She's an ES-Artist from 1980.

Add a great neck (with a valute), super-accurate and stable tuning. Where oh where is she lacking?

There is always a turd in every bunch, but overall i have never met a bad '77 Gibson anything,......i think the older these Norlin's get the better they are. I haved owned a 1978 LP Custom for 37 years and it's been an awesome guitar. :salude

I have. Some just seem heavy and dead. They all are built very well with the exception of the Rocker Tenon, which I believe robs tone but can still make fore a cool sounding guitar. I sold so many, Les paula were on fire then. A good Norlin era, post 75, Les Paul in general can have a very tight focused, punchy tone. No flub or wool in the bass and lot's of bite and attack when you dig in. Sustain is almost always enhances on these guitars. They interface with high gain amps in a very cool way and give up a mighty crunch.

I learned back in the 70's that when comparing a vintage 50's Les paul to a Norlin there is a very noticeable difference. DIFFERENCE, in tone that you can hear. Yeah, the look different and are not vintage clones and that was always the big knock on them. I found the difference to be preferred sometimes and even though we had plenty of vintage and newer Norlin Era Les Pauls on recording and playing dates I did not always grab a 50's guitar. That DIFFERENCE can be desired. The other guitar player in my group at that time felt the same way. I look at them as paint and paintbrushes. Sonic Paint Brushes.

In my case I always use the brush and color that best suits the picture I wish to create. Hey, I play a shitload of amps too, I don't use the same make or gauge string on all my Les Pauls and view them all as the individual components they be.

It is just sad to lump a fantastic group of musical instruments under some turd banner just because at the time they didn't look or sound just like Jimmy Pages 59. That mind set was born from the desire to have a vintage type Les Paul, which was not available as a new option at the time. Anyone with open ears and open mind can soon discover the worth of such downplayed guitars. If you are such a person you will find some really amazing and unique sounding guitars. You may find some you like better than all others. If you stick up your nose and just blow off everything Norlin as bad or terrible you are only removing a whole pallet of wonderful playing and sounding guitars from consideration based only on false perceptions and group think. Sheeple never learn and Sheeple always make the Baaaa Baaaad choice.

In that era I specifically love the Les Paul Deluxe made in Kalamazoo with all the wrong stuff. Big headstock, pancake, layered body, three piece mahogany neck and all the rest. They are unique to Norlin and as they never made a 50's Deluxe there is no vintage throwback, unless you are a Sheeple. I find that on average they sound amazing. I love the feel and tone of the Mini Humbucking pickups. They have their own thing going on, and IMO it is a very good thing. I think of all the Norlin Era Les Pauls, with the exception of the Recording Model and later Artist Model, the lowly Deluxe presents a singular very, very useful tone that fits in nicely with any type of music and with any gear. They are not Standards. I just can't understand why everyone bitches that they don't sound like a Standard. Buy a flipping' Standard. A Deluxe is it's own thing and I think it is a great thing.

Now I have multiple Les Pauls from all eras. I play my Norlin Era soulmate Bad Betty and my first, a 72 Goldtop Deluxe the most. I have several Historics and again my first a 2000 R9 is a favorite and gets lots of playing time. Very different guitars, and that's the point. The differences give me options and options give me vibrancy.

And it virtually never asks anything from me.

Just got a xmas gift that floored me big time. A Les Paul Standard year 1977 serial number 73237020 . Looked it up and was made November 19, 1977 at Kalamazoo plant. All original with case.
I've always wanted a LP and this is unbelievable. I love the sound, feel, and look of this art piece. Solid body not pancake and reading up on these guitars. Been playing Fenders all my life (over 45 years) and now I have no idea why I never bought a LP. I used to own a Gibson '57 hollow body slim 225 dual PU that I gave my bro in 1980. Now I have a '62 all original strat, an '84 japanese E series strat, a '98 american strat, a thinline fender tele with humbuckers (fender type), and acoustics but I LOVE this standard by far. It's like a door opened and fat oozes out. Sweet lovely thick sounds. I am starting to read up about these guitars and sure am happy that I'm alive to own and play one. What's the huge difference about Norlin or non Norlin and which one is mine?

Not generalizing, but I had a 1972 Black Beauty that was pretty heavy, but it was one of the best-made, best-playing, best-sounding guitars ever.

Have you ever played an ES325? Ugly as all heck but Firebird pickups on a center block semi sound like nothing else -- great blues tone.

Every era has some dogs, but a good guitar is a good guitar and Gibson made some gems in the "Norlin era".
