• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What is this?!? besides awesome

So I had a 2016 Gretcsh white falcon which was nice and all but.... it was made in Japan. This made me feel bad because it felt weird. So I wanted to sell it. Well a fella offered to trade me for a real 1959 Tennesean 6119 Chet Atkins in orange-- one PUP (gretsch PAF).... some may say I was crazy to do what I did but after talking w him on the phone and feeling like he was a good dude we just -- swapped guitars! and man.... I feel so psyched about how I came out on this one. this guitar kicks ass! sounds and plays great and my god... mojo for miles. original case...

thats pretty cool! I've never seen a single pickup Gretsch before this... then a day or so ago I saw another single pickup, with the pickup in the neck position.

we had a local shop called Don's Pawn Shop when I was in high-school that used to have a wall of vintage Gretsch's. miss that place.

I've never been a Gretsch person, but that's a cool guitar. So, the Master Volume is on the lower horn and the switch I would bet is the tone control. If I had to guess you'd have two capacitor choices and one position would bypass it. Very cool.

yes I don't think they made a ton of these.... Gretsch actually did a reissue a few years back

although I think mine sounds better that-- not as twangy I think

Thanks!

I played it through my Friedman DS mini last night and it sounded awesome

It is a really great guitar. plays well, has nice action, and sounds really really cool.

and it has a soul. I"m sorry but a Japanese Gretsch.... how can that have any soul?

The japanese guitars are well made and sound good but... this is so much better

and it smells like an old lady's attic! what's more mojo than old lady attic smell?

I'm not sure what the electronics are but I think you are probably right--- in the middle it seems bypassed and then up or down it has some kind of tone thing that cuts some highs? almost sounds like palm muting a little

Ah, cousin Chet's* guitar. They are nice! You can do "Midnight Man" from James Gang Rides Again right, now.

Bob

* He really was my cousin. Funny, huh? We frequented the same guitar shop for years where he had his various Gretsch and Gibson prototypes shipped to test out.

Those are nice! I have a husk of one in the back room. I've owned a couple of single pickup 1959 Anniversary's and probably 15 Sixties Tennesseans. I currently have a 2008 6136T-LTV White Falcon(1959 spec'd with nitro-lacquer finish, TV Jones(I put his Ray Butts tribute pickups in it & an original 1964 wiring harness) along with a set of early Sixties Grover Imperial's and Bigsby). I also have a 1962 Country Club and a 1964 Country Club, both thinline(2"). I once had a 1958 6120 Chet and a 1961 6120 Chet.. I love them as much as I love my Les Paul's.

The ones later weren't really any different. The pole screws were about 1/2" shorter and that's about the only difference. The coil wire changed about early 70's to a purer copper wire. Early wire had a lot of impurities (as did Gibson's wire. FilterTron's were around 4k d.c. until mid 1972.

I for one love a lot of the newer Japanese made Gretsch guitars, especially after Fender took over the company. I owned a newer Country Gent that was outstanding in every way, and then traded that for another very cool DuoJet. In some ways I prefer the newer ones over the vintage ones, especially the mid 60's models where I see a ton of binding rot, but the one you got, is from what many people consider to be one of the golden years of Gretsch guitars! It's a beauty, congrats on your new rig! I bet it sounds great!!!

Here's a clip I did with my newer Country Gent which to me is the classic Filtertron tone. I just turned on the recorder while I was noodling one day....

I played a couple of Musician's Friend/Guitar Center special edition two-tone FSR Electromatic Pro Jets recently and was floored by the quality and great sound. It features a chambered basswood body and maple arched top and gives you that Gretsch tone for $699. Yummy.

I dig it -- sounded great rockabilly! thanks for sharing

no I completely get that the japanese guitars are great guitars and my white falcon was killer-- however I felt the soul of the instrument in my mind was a little off. I mean-- that's basically just me being a little crazy.

FWIW I actually like the 1959 guitar better in a number of ways-- aesthecically I love that orange color, it sounds killer-- AND its a little smaller body than the WF and I like that too

I love the body size on the 59's too! And the last one I played was ridiculously light! BTW it was the size of my double cut Country gent that made me sell it. That's why I bought my little DuoJet, and after an underwhelming start with that guitar, I got a titanium Tru-Arc bridge that COMPLETELY woke that guitar up. It was most of the most drastic changes I ever heard in a guitar, as my space control bridge was totally robbing the tone of that guitar.

Here's a pic of my current Gretsch although it's with the older bridge the sucked (literally)...
