Hi guys

I got some replacement tuner buttons for my Historic SG. When replacing the buttons, any tips for getting the spacing right?
Do the Double ring buttons go further onto the post?

Here is a crappy pic of the buttons I am using

Any advice would be great.

If you are talking about the depth when heating and pressing them onto the tuner shafts, I like to pre-center drill the new buttons in a drill press to the proper depth, using a drill bit just under the shaft diameter, then simply "feel" when they are there. I've also used a small piece of wood sanded to the desired gap, but after getting the hang of it find this not needed.

And, yes, the double-rings sit deeper than single-rings (exactly 1 ring deeper).

I ordered a set of those tips too (if they are the same, approx 10$$ on ebay) and for that kinda money very nice looking. I will use them for my ES-335.

Gotta love double rings

These were about $16, I got them from theblackrider. They look infinitely better than the stock green ones :dude:

I'll post a pick once they are installed. These already have holes, so I assume it is just a straight swop.

yes, you're right, 16 bucks from blackrider, same with me. I had to add some 10 $$ or so for shipping to Germany but everything worked fine with him and the tips are great bang for the buck.

I haven't installed mine yet. Will you tell how it worked for you and if there are some advices to be followed to get a good result? Thanks in advance

That's one thing that REALLY bothers me...is why Gibson doesn't offer the correct double ring tuner on Historic SGs...they'll put them on the R0...why not the SG/LP's????

I've been wondering that myself for years, especially since MOST '60 Les Pauls still had the single ring tuners but ALL SGs had double rings.

My install did not work. Got the old button off, but the new one does not go on far enough. Tried a few things and split the button open, face palm moment.

maybe you didn't heat up the post good enough to move it through the new button?

Oddly my 1959 EDS-1275 came with original double ring buttons, maybe some of the earliest made. Go figure.

No, I heated it really well. It seems you need to drill them a little, too get it deeper on the shaft. It only went in to the exact point on the peg where the old tuner went too. Which means it sticks out too far. I hope you have better luck Sharky :salude

I was so annoyed eventually I was beyond the point of troubleshooting lol

hah, I have different trouble though. The tuners on the ES-won't move after the screws are removed. Even hammering on the post will not push them out. It seems they stick on the laquer or whatever and I am afraid to ruin the surface when using too much violence. Heating up the tuner while mounted does not seem to be a good idea to me

JD, I misunderstood your post. I thought u were referring to buttons that don't come pre-drilled.

I could probably salvage the split button with some superglue.

Quick question, how does one lubricate these tuners. The way I heated the post I may need to lube it again if it is a grease type lubricant?

Sharky, that's a pity. I wouldn't take the chance either.

The tuners are lubricated with white petroleum jelly (vaseline). I have some old industrial syringes and large blunt needles I salvaged from our factory after a flood. I pack one of them with petroleum jelly and keep it on my workbench to inject some new grease in the oil hole on the back of the tuner.
