• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

I'm considering getting one of these as a backup / smaller alternative to the Kemper. From what I understand it's not a million miles away from a Kemper in terms of what it does so I'm hoping I could transfer / replicate profiles across. I just sometimes play acoustic gigs where a Kemper head is a bit of a luxury when I use one patch, but I do want the effects (compression and reverb) and the ability to use IRs because I use IRs of acoustic guitars to help with the pickup sound.

Glad to see the Pod getting a mention here, I had the Pod Pro back in the day. I still have it somewhere. Limited effects and numbers of amps looking back but a couple of the Marshalls were really great tones. Changed the game in home recording for me.

Don't know if this is considered a modeler or Solid State.

Whatever.

It is all analog, small, tough, and sounds great with no digital hash.
Never any trouble or complaints. Just plug in and play. They make nicer versions of the fly rig now.
I can just put it in a small bag and carry it anywhere.
I also have the Blonde private stock and the Bass VT Deluxe. I can go direct with both of these. Those two can be powered by 48v Phantom Power or 9v battery.
No complaints at all. No BS or messing with menus.

edit: (I just need to add this)
The biggest difference between this analog box and a computer modeler is that I can push it into saturation like a tube amp. The computer modelers have a ceiling. I cant push those past the programmed limit. This, to me, feels more like a tube amp.

I just put some console tape on it so I can see it easier.
Tech 21 makes good stuff.

I have the RK Fly model. Essentially the same but with an overdrive section tweeked to Richie's liking. I agree with everything you said. The downside, IMO, is that it sounds horrible in front of an amp and needs to go into the amp's FX loop return if it has one. I've gigged with it direct into the PA board (no amp). As long as the board is set with a relatively flat or neutral eq it sounds amazing. The overdrive can sound wonderfully natural or terribly buzzy depending on the eq.

Yes. Totally. Great piece of gear.
I found it goes way over the top if it's not in the right place on the back line.

When Lloyd was in a session at the studio, he was actually using one, I talked to him about the Fly rig. Nice guy. RIP, Lloyd.

I like how the new versions have the reverb separate and a tuner. I would get one of those, but by doing that, I would obsolete the Fly Rig I have. So, I'll just keep it.

I forgot I have a flyrig5 too. Great option for silent stage live gigs

I started using Fractal gear about 5 years ago and it's really all I use anymore. I've got an FM9. I play in 9-piece r&b/funk band doing lots of EW&F, Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Average White Band, Billy Preston, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Steely Dan, etc. So it's not really a lot of guitar-oriented music per se. The FM9 (into an FRFR monitor and direct to the FOH) has been a godsend for me. It's light, easy to set up, sounds/feels great, has been 100% reliable, the sound is consistent and it really does everything I need. If I was playing in a more blues/rock oriented band, I might want to go back to one of my tube amp rigs...but for what I'm doing, the FM9 has been great.

Hey lets not forget this great little box. It's older brother was the one of the first.
Some great amps squeezed in there.
This is great for going straight into the desk.
