From personal experience, ebony has a cleaner, clearer, more focused and brighter tone than that of rosewood. It's also harder, smoother to the touch, need lesser maintenance, and more expensive than that of rosewood as well.

The best advice is for you to go to a local guitar shop and compare the LP Custom (ebony) with the Standard (rosewood). Your guitar is most likely will be a bit brighter and a little less sustain than that of the LP Custom.

Total SPECULATION here - will your guitar have a maple or mahogany arch-top? A mahogany cap instead of a maple cap might warm the guitar up a little bit more to offset the added brightness of the bolt-on neck. An all mahogany guitar will most likely have more resonance too. Just something to keep in mind.

In addition, you can do alot of mix and match to compensate for the brightness and warmness of sound. For examples-
1) mahogany (no maple) body, rosewood fretboard, maple neck for added strength, stability, tonal brightness and focus
2) mahogany (no maple) body and neck, ebony fretboard for added brightness and focus
3) mahogany & maple body, mahogany neck, rosewood, etc...

Again, these are just speculations on my part. From the money you will spend, and the sound you're after, wouldn't it be easier just to get an LP Sudio? Well, to each his own. hope this helps!

I don't want to piss anyone off but in my own opinion Gibson Les Pauls could have better quality. I believe that I can make a higher quality guitar because 1) My guitar dosent have to be as rushed and possibally made in vain cousing mistakes, and 2) I dont mind spending more than usual on a guitar (meaning I dont have a budget)if it is made well (the way I would make it).
Also I love working with my hands

Brian Mays guitar

Brian May's guitar is block board. (2X4s) glued and screwed together to make the body. The body is veneered.

The neck is mahogany and has an OAK fingerboard that is painted black.

How his guitar can sound so freakin' cool is beyond my scope of knowledge.

It's like 1+1=7

Could it be more about human fingers playing it, rather than the specific wood it's made of? Hmmmmmm.....

Interesting thread. Korina, like Mahogany, is all over the place weight wise. Generally speaking, two relatively lightweight bodies, the Korina will have a slightly brighter sound. Think Ash vs. Alder Strat bodies :jim

I'm not sure how the Pearly Gates will sound with Korina. In my LP, the neck is great.
1) it doesn't have as much highs as a Paf-type pup, but the lack of highs is compensated for a healthy dose of upper mids, therefore it is not a "dark" or "tame" sounding pup at all.
2) it has a lof of mids which resulted in bigger/thicker overall sound - good for jazz/blues/classic rock.
3) it has a great amount of bass also - for added warmness
Overall, I found the neck pup to be on the warm side. I doesn't have the "glassiness" highs (which I love) of a A5 Magnet pup, a la the SD '59.

The PG bridge pup did nothing for me. I thought it was thin and bright. However, the combine position sounds incredible!

Korina and mahogany are very similar. In general, I think you might get more resonance (vibrattion -> more tonal, 3D complexity) with Korina. Unfortunately, with the extra resonance, you might loose some sustain, raunchiness and attitude of the darker/heavier mahogany. The guitar might sound "too nice," for lack of a better description. In addition, I anticipate that the bolt-on neck of your guitar will make it a bit brighter than the LP. From these premises, the PG sounds perfect. Hope this help.
I know this is an old thread, but if You want the best pickups on the Market check out Michael Mohr at www.primaguitarshop.com Michael's been winding Pickups nearly 40 years (since age 15) and it's His full time Job not a sideline. Michael will make Y'all Pickups for anything with Strings on it, Custom String Spacings, Magnets, etc, from 2.8K to 80. His Dust Devil's are works of art, any colour You could imagine.
His prices are cheaper than Gibson's, DiMarzio's or Duncan's. They're so Cheap I was sceptical until I read a post from someone on The Gear Page who said, "Michael is the real deal. His Pickups are hands down the best I've ever owned, even better than Pickups costing 2 to 4 times the price." I emailed Michael and He treated me like a Brother. When I asked him why His prices are so low He said, "I know I could charge a lot more, but I wanna get as many truely great Pickups into the hands of as many people as I can, people who couldn't otherwise afford them." Any Man who thinks like has got my vote! Call Michael, tell Him what You want, what kinda Guitar they're going into, type of wood, etc and He'll hook You right up. I put a set of PAulF's in my Brother in Law's 335. He's a Veteran, been playing more than 50 years and says this Guitar sounds even better than His Vintage Gibson's with these Pickups. Michael is a great Guy. Tell him Jimmy in NC sent You.

I wasn't trying to pimp anything. I'm sorry if it comes across like that. Michael has no idea I posted any of this.
Most Handwound Pickups are $400-$600 per set (2 Humbuckers) with some costing over $1,500 Michael's Prima Guitar Shop PAulF's are $181 per set. I found something truly great at a really good price and posted it to to help as many as I could save some hard earned cash and get a truely great product in the process. I was just responding to someone who mentioned finding Pickups that go well with Korina. I was honestly and sincerely trying to help as many people as possible. When someone tells me of a great deal I really appreciate it and tell them so. Not everyone is out to get someone or has an ulterior motive. There are still still some people who just wanna help their Fellow Man.
Best Wishes & God

I've not gone anywhere. I wouldn't let a little bit of criticism run me off, I'm not that thin skinned. I'm not mad and I hope You're not. As far as the Pickups go if You wanna know more click the links in my previous posts. Prima Guitar Shop has a really nice website, but it's best to call. You'll get Michael himself and He's a really great Guy, a wealth of knowledge. I had seen Prima Pickups before, but as I said I was sceptical because they're less than half the price of most Handwounds. You know what they say, "You get what You pay for and they were so cheap I dismissed them thinking they wouldn't be much to them at that price. Boy was I wrong. I mentioned seeing a post from someone just like me on The Gear Page and after reading that I thought here's Guy who's doesn't have any vested interest in these, not making any money or getting anything out on the deal posting this glowing review so they must be good. He said he found something really great at a really great price and was passing it along to help people. It helped me so I was passing it along to help people here. Most people buy machine wounds because they can't afford Handwounds, but these are less than Gibson's, DiMarzio's or Duncan's. Anyhow enough said I was just trying help others like I was helped.

How convenient. Ooooh, and a little fake blessing on the side to warm us over. Folks are not ignorant or stupid here (ok, most are not).

You're absolutely right most people aren't ignorant and they know my Wish for Blessings for everyone was 110% sincere. You must be wee small little child who's so empty inside you have to throw off on others to make yourself feel big and important. All you're doing is showing your true colours and letting everyone know what a weak pathetic individual you really are. What gives you the right to judge what's in another man's Heart and decide whether or not they're sincere. If you didn't have such an inferiority complex you wouldn't need ridicule others to make yourself feel superior. Have you ever heard the expression, "It's better to thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt." I'm not mad at you, on the contrary I feel sorry for you and people like you because you can never fully experience life until you first learn Reverence for life and all living things. It's my sincere wish that one day you finally grow up and realise this. Maybe one day you'll grow up, become an adult instead of a child then you won't feel the need to belittle others to make yourself feel important. Someone else said that I was singing praises for someone I didn't really even know. Once again someone else talking about something they know nothing about. From the very first time I contacted Michael He treated me like Family, like a Brother. We quickly became Friends. and have remained so to this very day, but as God is my Witness Michael has know idea I posted anything about His Prima Guitar Shop Pickups. He has plenty of business and don't need me. If y'all can't contribute something useful to this thread then quit wasting everyone's time throwing off on me.I posted the information in response to someone who mentioned trying to find Pickups that go well with Korina (Limba) that's all. I sincerely want to help people get some truly great Handwound Pickups for less than the price mass produced machine wounds. If you had a Friend about to spend $3,000 on a mass produced factory Guitar, but you knew where they could get a Beautiful Handmade Guitar that's superior in every way for $2,500 you'd tell them wouldn't you. Well it's just that simple. I read somebody's post talking about Pickups and I wanted to keep them from wasting $200 or $300 bucks on mass produced machine wounds when they could get Handwound Humbuckers that are superior in every way for $181 per set of 2 or P-94's (Humbucker size P-90's) around the same price. I joined this Forum to help others, but since joining I've been called names, accused of lying, been berated and belittled. I've posted on other Forums and I've never been treated with such anger, hatred and hostility, makes me wish I'd never joined. It's one thing to disagree with someone, but it's another to talk pure shit someone you've never even met. I guess it's easy to do when you're hiding behind a computer. I wonder if those same people would be so quick with their insults if they were face to face with a 6''2" - 260lb man? Probably wouldn't have much to say then. Anyway I thought this was supposed to be a Forum where people come together to help one another not talk shit to others. Okay I've said my peace or piece whichever you prefer. I'm not mad. There's always a few rotten apples in every barrel trying to spoil it for everybody else. If anybody doubts my words on Prima Guitar Shop Pickups check the website. You won't believe the prices. Call Michael and you'll see what a really nice personable Guy He is. He'll treat you like Family.
God Bless Y'all, Your Friends &
Families. Jimmy in NC....

Hey Jimmy, I love reading a good rant. Do you think you could work a little on your paragraphing for the next one? Reading your last post was really difficult and tiring.

BTW, I don't see all the anger you claim you have recieved from us. I hope you will stay around here and get thicker skin :) !

GUYS! LAY OFF JIMMY! Geez! I was having some good natured fun with the pimp remarks! I was NOT meaning them in anything but a joking manner! I did it because you don't USUALLY get a marketing callout on a necro thread!
