This is really so pathetic it is kinda silly, but it agrivated me so bad I am going to post it.

I went into the place just to see if they had a 137 so I could see it in person, and in their high dollar vintage section they had a used classic for 2500 bucks.

I just had to but their balls on it so I asked the manager why so much for a 1100 dollar at best guitar.....you know the dribble I got....

Oh it is rare, it has this top, it has that....I said it was missing the pickguard so it should be worth less.

Plus they were selling new for just a little more than a studio a short time ago.

Those fuggers are truly nuts

There's a GC in my area that is bursting at the seams with old Selmer amps. They probably have as many old Selmers that they do new Fenders! It seems they had a guy working there (past tense) that thought these amps were going to be the next hot thing, so he bought all he could get his hands on at top dollar ("You just wait! We're gonna make a killing on this!"). They priced them all WAY through the roof.

And there they sit...

hmmm that sounds like a store near me in Catonsville Maryland, but it's not a GC.

He's always asking well over 5 grand for early 90s reissues and pre '95 PRS guitars. :)spin

My latest GC story.....

So I went in there to buy strings (about the only thing I buy there anymore) and saw a well-checked J-160E for $1500 (or thereabouts). On closer inspection, it was clear it was a fake. A very poor fake. Badly installed logo and a ply top. It's probably an older Japanese copy (maybe Takemine). I cannot BELIEVE some moron there thought this was real.

Almost all 160e's 335's and 175's have ply tops, among other bits though a 160e should have an inlay logo not a decal iirc... I'm always amazed at the Beatles records 'cause a lot of their acoustic guitar parts were recorded on unplugged 160e's; I've only played a handful of them and they all sounded like doodoo.
Maybe it is the hands after all....:wow

One of the local GC's around here had a used Peavey Rage amp for $190; a brand new one is like a $100 and this one wasn't even the most recent version.

Actually, I prefer Chucks, but Bills is OK. It's the place across the street, Guitar Exchange. Those guitars have birthdays in that store. :)

I can't go to GC anymore. It genuinely puts me into a funk for a day or two. I don't know if it's the desperation on the faces of the staff, the 14 year old kids who play better than I ever will, or the cavity search I get when I try to leave, that place depresses me.

I couldn't have put it better! That describes perfectly the way I feel - thanks for expressing it better than I ever could!

GEx is the most laughable shop pricewise that I've ever seen. I suppose that guy does that as a hobby, because I never see stuff move off of his list unless it ends up on another dealer's (most likely show trades, I'll guess). He's not too pleasant to speak to either. I once asked him about a guitar that was priced more than three times the going rate for the model/yr (politely inquiring if the price could be any lower) and got a nasty response. No thanks.

Their pricing is a freakin joke.

By now you guys have seen all the Instrument Exchange auctions on ebay. Even in space these guys have to make complete a*holes out of themselves-- 2 to 3 times market value on nearly every single item they list.

Instrument Exchange must be run by.....

totally patheic mental fools.

I have never seen such overly inflated jokes of guitars.

I will call them and tey and sell them some and see what they say.

Ouch.

I know this is going against the grain. But when I got my '02 LP std at xmas, I got it from my local GC.

I too, dreaded even being seen near a GC let alone going inside one but I had time to lkill and wanted to check out all the stores within a reasonable radius of my home.

Maybe I just happened in on an off day, but I wasn't hounded, hassled or anally probed. Quite a difference from most GC visits right there!

Ended up seeing the '02 hanging way up high on display with some R9's (thank god so it wasn't mishandled. Found out it just came in. Played it. Liked it more than others I had tried so I brought it home (but had to snivel like hell just to get the real Gibson case thrown in rather than than an SK case). That was the only bad part. Other than that I had great service. I paid probably $100 more than if I sent out somewhere but I got to pick "the one that felt right".

See my icon for pic. Anyhow, I agree in every way that all the other posts line up with my prior GC experience but hey, even a squirrel can find his nuts one day at a GC. Just has to be the right day. :wink

Woof!

I had the same experience. I wanted an Ebony Standard, but the one they had was test driven so often that it was a hopeless cause. Then I played the lightburst, and it had yet to be broken in. It felt new, and was clean. Played it and loved it.
