• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

They all look great but IMO this one will look spectacular, you very rarely see any Historic's with wide irregular ribbon flame like this... very burst-like :2cool

Wild!

Just curious, what did the old tops look like when they came off? Were they one piece, or broken to bits?

Good stuff, great selections of woods. Me got some burning in the stove up there too. Can't wait to see these finished. You have some colors picked out.

Hi MF, colors are picked out, 2 will have a Pearly Gates color, 1 will have a Heritage Cherry Burst color.

Great project. look like it's coming along great

With all these mods will this guitar still actually be considered a Gibson?

How far can it go before it becomes something else

As far as any makeovers goes, "all these mods" are typically done on a full makeover except for the additional step of the retop, and it is still a legal Gibson.

Don't know exactly, but most likely either all sand dust, or a mixture of wood chips and sand dust. I have seen instances where the entire top was removed as a whole piece, but for Dave, I would not think that a practical way to go, in addition I have no interest in the old top.

I would have kept that awesome looking flamed-top R8!

That guitar weighs 8.2 lbs and will be my new Pearly Gates with a hard rock maple top. It will be even more awesome when Dave completes it. :yah:

Even more awesome is even better!

How long will it take Dave to finish each guitar?

Hope it all works out cause this is looking close to 50k to me.

In the whole scheme of things, it so far is working out, even with some of the hurdles. Just curious how did you come up with the 50k figure?

Well maybe a lil high but considering where you purchased the guitars you gotta have a chunk just in the guitars alone

You would think, but no. That is the beauty of the used reissue market, R8s are relatively inexpensive. All 3 guitars were had for under 9k. For what I needed in this project, R8s delivered.

It doesnt matter to me how much you spend on the said guitars but IMO that is alot not fully knowing the outcome. In other words Im sure they will look great but there`s no way of telling what they will sound like. From what I know the full works at HM is close to 4k and doesnt include putting a whole new top on. 25k 50k etc too much for me anyways. I will be following the topic, hence this is very interesting. Good Day

Dave's done a repair for me, & I've met him & even visited his shop. He doesn't come off as the kind of guy who would crank out duds just to turn a buck. He cares about what he is doing.
