• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

Is this something that can ever be solved? Or do I just have to remove it and forget about it? Seems to me the saddles don't just fall out anyway... they have to be pretty much yanked out.

Sometimes the saddles will want to fall out and sometimes they won't. It depends on how they fit with that particular bridge.

You can bend the wire down between the screws and that seems to usually do the trick, or a drop of clear nail polish will work too. On my R4BB I have no wire, just a small drop of nail polish where the screw head sits in the bridge since they want to fall out on their own.

But when it will fall out is when you're playing out and break a string. The damn thing will fall out and you'll never find it... Then it's 5 strings for the rest of the night.

YIKES!!!

So do you just live with it, or do you try to bend the wire into the screws, or nail polish it down or what? I really can't hear it when I play through an amp, but I hear it pretty bad when I play unplugged. I keep wondering if it affects the tone?

Granted this was a long time ago - but after I had a wire that came with the ABR rust, I made a new one with a piece of guitar string that was heavier in gauge than the original wire (an unwound G maybe?). It fits snugly into holes, tightly over the saddles and I don't think it buzzes. At least it's easy to get the raw materials;)

PhilcoFord,
I crimp the wire between the screw heads. Just give it a tweek with a screwdriver or needlenose pliers. What you want is a V shaped bend downward between the screws. This solves the problem.

Is there enough wire to do that for all five spaces?

You only need ONE crimp. That is all it takes to tighten and lower the retaining wire away from the strings, which is the cause of the rattle/buzz.

Sorry for being dense, but where do you crimp it? In the middle between the D and G? Are you trying to get one large "v" shape from high E to low E? Is that what you're saying?

It dosen't really matter where you crimp it. What happens is the wire is loose and rises to hit the vibrating string on the saddle. By putting a downward crimp in the wire it shortens it's length and tightens the wire down on the saddle screws. This eliminates the problem in my experience.
