• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

Anybody know if black was a finish that was offered on Deluxes in '74? There is one for sale locally and I'm trying to figure out if it is a refin. BTW what do you think a reasonable price would be in this market?

Do you live in/near Toronto, by chance? I found a black one locally as well. $1,800 asking price.

Son of a!! :)
I'm actually interested in it as well...don't worry, I'm not going to lose any sleep if I don't buy it and I'm in no rush. I asked him to contact me in a week if it doesn' sell. He says:

Everything works on it
No repairs
Don't believe their to be any mods, the tuners might be newer
Don't think the guitar was refinished
Owned for 10-12 years.. selling because he longer plays it.

guitarmory, if you do check it out let me know what you think.

Same here. It caught my eye because it looks really cool, but I already own a deluxe. He told me the same details. The thing is I can't find any other examples of a black deluxe that is not one of the reissues. Anybody?

Here is a pic... I love the look of this guitar!! A great candidate for an old black replica.

Just a thought: you may find the answer to a refin in the pickup cavities if he's prepared to lift the pups for you to see. Also, Kluson style 'plastic' tuners are more like to be the norm for this guitar from new.

One reason for a doing a black refin all over is it would hide a headstock mend.

good point, but often you find other reasons for refins as well. Gibson sunburst have not been the flavor of the month among all societies. It might just been a matter of taste.
Or, its cheaper to refin that ol` battered one than buying one new custom:wah maybe....

Maybe I'm way off on this one, but even with or without a repaired neck and a refin...a 35 year LP for $1,800 doesn't sound like a bad deal. Probably under $1,500 if you sweet talk him...

I think so, especially if you can reel it in at $1.5K

His ad says no repairs, I'd hope that is the case.
