I had these pickups in my Les Paul, which I'm selling since I dropped in my Duncan 59's.

I think that is AL V, as in Alnico 5. This is the stock Gibson USA Standard pickup (BurstBucker Pro) IIRC.

There is such an animal (Alnico IV or Alnico 4) but not a standard Gibson magnet.

I think they probably mean "Al V" (AlNiCo 5), not "A IV". I don't know of any modern Gibson pickups with A4 magnets.

So is this BB1/BB2 set a one-off? They're supposed to have AlNiCo II magnets in them. The AlNiCo Vs are for the BB Pros.

i hope this is a bit on topic, but can a ceramic magnet be swapped out for an ALNICO magnet? I have a classic with the 496R and 500T (i think thats the right number spec) Id like to put in ALNICO II or III at least in the bridge. Is this do-able, or even a good idea?
thanks

pist0lpete, Spencer Mumford is a pro p/u winder, so your question doesn't quite apply. I'm not trying to be an ass about it; just sayin'.

Has anyone tried Alnico IV magnets in a Burstbucker I + II pair? What were the results? I put an Alnico IV in a 70's? T-Top and put it in my LP and it definitely smoothed it out. The Burstbuckers in my 08 R0 are a bit ice-picky and I'm going for a flatter more even tone.

Yeah I had put a Burstbucker 3 into my standard. I found the neck a bit sterile with the short A5 and while the A2 in the bridge was nice I thought it could do better. I put rough sandcast long A4s into the pair and it really worked well. Both were smoother and better defined. It seemed like they were a bit sweeter and they seemed to come out better for the clean tones. A mate of mine has the guitar at the moment and has taken very well to them. I'm a bit suprised because he hated the stock burstbuckers.

Thank bigtomrodney - I have a set of AIV's coming that I got off fleabay. I'll experiment with those in the BB's and post the results...uh..my opinion. I think Gibson really dropped the ball on the BB's. I don't think they give a shite how they sound, considering how little effort they put into them. Maybe they should have just stuck with the '57 Classics...which sound great in my SG. I've been tempted to go with them in my R0 and relegate the BB's to my ever-rising heap of pickup disappointments, but if there's a chance I can save them (on the cheap) I'll try.
