• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

I must have 24 hours of video on him.
He's one of the greatest in my book, and definitely the greatest Strat player.

He was awesome. I especially love 70's Rory... I'm always throwing on the Rockpalast or Montreux DVD's... Badass :dude:

The Rockpalast DVD releases are great... The ZZ top w/Pearly is incredible too...

Here's the awesome Rory interview that accompanies the DVD.... Although I love the 70's vibe, I particularly enjoy the cultural aspects: A German and an Irishman discussing American blues and how it relates to their respective cultures in post modern Europe... Great stuff :dude:

The one negative thing I'll say about Hendrix is as much of an innovator as he was, he's a little sloppy for my tastes... I always liked Clapton the best of the 60's guitar heroes for his speed, authority and precision... I feel the same way about guys like Micheal Schenker, Gary Moore, Yngwie, SRV and Paul Gilbert... I've always preferred physical, athletic players that still have finesse... Technique is the one thing that isn't subjective when critiquing a player... You can say, 'I like Hendrix better than Clapton,' but you can't say Hendrix has better technique.

Not in the studio, imo. Live, yeah. He was pretty sloppy. But then again he was on a treadmill to make other people money so I can see that as burnout.

Yeah, that's true... The 60's guys are tough... Clapton had the best technique, Page was in the best band/songs and Hendrix was the most innovative, charismatic and over the top... Beck was cool too...

No doubt. The '60s was a good time for guitar players!

I think the 70's were better.
Hey, shred, ever heard of Ollie Halsall? That guy was pretty amazing for the time. If you can't wait, skip to 2:22 for the solo but you should listen to the entire song. Not bad for 1971.

and here's the entire album of that band.

and just for fun this little gem, think early AC/DC (Ride on) with a brain.

I also think Rory is the master of the strat. Not only was he a great player (who sometimes sounded very "modern" for his time, if that makes sense?), but he had the whole package: the look, the voice, the stage prescense and supposedly the kindness.

Speaking of early guitar heroes: I think Jan Akkerman often is forgotten when people talk of the early 70's. Who is better than who is of course a subjective thing, and I don't want to take anything away from Clapton and Hendrix, but Akkerman was just on a whole new level (and still is) IMHO.

I feel like no one can ever be "better" than Beck, he has his own thing going on.

Can't disagree with any of that.
Can probably add in Pete Townsend for writing catchy riffs, The Beatles for basically changing everything...
