Hello,

I have 2 historic makeover Les Paul Standards. They are both nice guitars, but I don't really have a need to have two similar guitars that are different colors (let's not have the debate that every guitar is unique unto itself please). I originally got this Les Paul because I thought I was joining a band and wanted to have a back-up guitar, but that ended up falling through. I don't mind having a harem of guitars (though I prefer to keep the herd thinned down to guitars I play), but I prefer them to all be unique. The guitar is nice, has good tone, but I am more bonded with my other standard.

I've really been thinking about getting rid of my second HM and using towards the purchase of a vintage guitar. I don't have any cash to spend so I am looking at what options I have to make a trade or maybe a trade and cash in my pocket. I really want a '58 single cut jr (like Martin Barre played on aqualung), but I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to sell my guitar, or taking much of a loss on it in the process (would it be a loss to make a straight trade?).

I'm a fan of Clapton and have always considered the idea of having a '63/'64 SG. I have found a husk that someone is willing to do an even trade of husk for husk. Original finish, frets, and wood.

I would be interested in hearing others opinions/thoughts on this opportunity. Should I trade my HM (husk) for a '63 SG (husk)? Any reason I should not? Am I being lazy and do you think I would be able to move my HM quickly for enough money to buy a complete '63sg without having to go back later and accumulate vintage parts? Or is this GAS and I should stay focused on the single cut jr? Jr's are easy to find and prices are always pretty reasonable... buying an SG out-right wouldn't be the best thing to do over the next few years...

So much of what you are asking is down to personal preference. I would say, go for the guitar you want the most, even if it means chipping in some more yourself and waiting and saving to have the ability to do that, then do one deal, and end up happy. :) It sounds like that would be the junior.

After that, its all about what the guitar is worth to you and what you have in it. I have never had a problem selling guitars if the price is right.

Good luck.

I'd list the HM for sale and start your search for a Jr. that calls to you.
I have been looking for the right Jr. myself, but keep getting side tracked by other options/purchases.
An example is the white '64 SG Jr. I purchased recently...it's a fine guitar, but I still find myself wanting a 57-58 sunburst.

Thanks for your opinion. You are probably right about the Jr. I've decided to go for it anyways. GAS is getting the best of me and I see it as a no lose situation, as I can probably unload it fairly easy if it doesn't work out. It's really a no lose situation.

It will need a re-fret soon and most of the vintage parts are gone. I have some vintage parts on my HM that I can sell and use to fund proper replacement parts for this guitar. I actually already have the correct pots for the guitar, so I'm good there. I'll rock it like it is for now and restore it as time and funds permit. It's about the old wood mostly anyways. The big things to find will be period correct lyre vibrola, Pat#'s, and I'll probably put grovers on it for fun.
