• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

What's the best JR/Special?

I am considering a JR. I like the double cut but I've heard that the single cut is better. And that the single with one pickup is the best.

I like the reissue special with two picups and tuneomatic.

Aren't they making a regular Gibson USA version, as well as a historic version? I'd probably buy the single cut RI with the tune-a-matic. I always like the singlecut guitars better... although I think the double cut Juniors look pretty cool. I don't know why Juniors seem to sound better, maybe because less wiring -- no switch etc. It seems like you could maybe rewire a Special so that it might sound just as good? I don't know if they make a historic Special RI with a wrap-around tailpice nowdays, but some people think they sound better than the tune-a-matic setup.

The consensus around here for vintage guitars seems to be Junior over Specials. People seem split on the single and double cut issue, but the single cuts seem to have the edge in favor. I personally like both. A double cut with a fat neck sounds awesome and has great upper neck access. That's something I miss with my Les Paul.

my 2 cents: a single cut special with P90's.

I've owned many many jrs - both single-cut and double. Every one sounded great, but the two best sounding and playing ones were a 1958 Double-cut and and a 1960 TV jr.
