Wasn't this also have to do something with using that chemical compound to make the flame pop on the top . I recall a Forum sponsor (shop owner ) telling me about this process , I just forgot what the chemical was and do remember being told that this stuff is toxic ?Chatoyance is the optical reflective effect we often speak of as "movement"... as found in cat's eye stones.
OP refers to when TM spoke about the era when they were pre-staining/sanding the maple to achieve contrast which make flames "pop" [as PRS does de rigueur].
I believe this to be the case, as I recall the interview [I can't verify, as OP gave no explicit reference].
