• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

Reissue Strings

This weekend I tried a set of Gibson's Reissue strings. I strung up my R8, gave each string a little stretch, and tuned. What really surprised me was how the guitar then stayed in tune, despite many bends. I usually use GHS and I retune 3 or 4 times. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I dunno what they had on my R7 from the factory but they SUCKED!
Those are the Gibson Vintage Reissues, pure nickel, .010 - .046. These strings have a nice feel to them because they are nickel, but the tension is higher and these sound dead to me brand new out of the pack.

Another excellent pure nickel string to try is the Ernie Ball Classic series. These are my current favorites - nice feel, smooth tone and good tension.

Speaking of stretching... I once changed strings in front of a guy that'd been playing for 15 years and he says "What the hell are you doing???" I was floored!

Black Bear,

You'll enjoy this one. I was playing one night with some young dudes (just a little older than my daughters) and I had a recently acquired '98 R8 with a cool looking tiger stripe top. While we're packing up, the young man with the blue Ibanez superstrat comes over and he's looking at my R8. He say's - "What kind of guitar is that?" and peers at the headstock, then says "Oh, Gibson, those are good guitars. Sounds a little country though." Funny, he never knew it was a Lester, let alone an R8 with a '50's looking top. He wasn't impressed at all.

I agree with 58flame and Jeff...

The reissue strings seem to tune up well and hold it. I like that about them. I also like the Nickel and I agree that they are not as slinky out of the pack as say.. Ernie Ball super slinky hehe which is what I normally use.

On the plus side they seem to last longer than the slinkies somehow. After a while the slinkies get a bit dead and need changing. The Gibson reissues seem to stay like they were at the start...

I also like the packaging and the fact that they are good value (if you can find them) and they come with spare 1st and 2nd strings. Overall I would probably use them except I can't find them around here anymore!
