Re-Loving Clapton

Clapton’s last few studio albums have made me yawn. I loved most every album he did until Old Sock. Even then, I held out hope for great stuff and was disappointed. This week, I listened to the recent releases, the lockdown live Lady in the Balcony and the live stuff from the From the Cradle era. Boy he burns up the stage on that album Nothing but the Blues. I’m a casual fan of the blues, but this album is so fantastic. He was on his game vocally too. Whatever my feelings about his politics, I love Clapton. His 24 Nights live album a few decades ago reAwakened my love of guitar, and these recent releases remind me of what an inspiration his playing is.

The From the Cradle album and tour was good. Band and his tone was good. Lot of good old guitars and amps.

Been listening to 'Five Live Yardbirds' which, more-or-less where it started for him commercially [with him then moving on quickly to John Mayall & then Cream].

Clapton is as good as it gets. There's always something to learn. As far as everything He's ever said and done, He was, is, and always will be correct.

Very true! Here`s two of my favorite tunes by Clapton ever--late in his `74 'comebck from heroin addiction tour'. In his autobiography, he states that it took him some time to get 'his chops' back--seems like he`s got `em back here. Also this has to be his 'Cut Explorer' which he played on that tour .

Everyone is so angry these days. Just stop it and dig the music and the great commentary about Clapton’s playing. I shouldn’t even have mentioned politics. I apologize.

Could we also talk about Clapton’s voice? I believe his vocals improved around the time of the Journeyman album, and he still sounds great. His vocals are amazing on Nothing but the Blues. The Lady in the Balcony album shows he can still sing wonderfully.

It was already clear you were unfamiliar with the concept... But to read a book is to open physical bound pages of text and, with your eyes and brain-power, comprehend and translate the typed words to gain knowledge and information.

How did you come to that conclusion? I take that as more-or-less a 'put down' towards me from you.

Also if you read my post above [Post #7] you will see that I clearly refer to Clapton`s autobiography--does that mean that I have read it?!
Alot of the public has become very much against Eric Clapton recently due his statements toward COVID & the British government etc--which is why I questioned your post concerning him; whether you were sincere or not with what you typed--that`s all. [Also along w/ you being against Facebook & the new 'Burst Believers' FB Page which I also questioned you about as for me you comment there was pretty vague].

I just wanted a further explanation from you there & here--that`s all. Please forgive me if i`m wrong in doing so.

Oh yeah, if I have any extra time, I prefer to play my guitar & keep my head in the sand concerning the 'important things'. I look to people like you for help with that--I`m too busy trying to make every note count with my guitar playing which doesn`t happen too often.

I agree with you. I was just questioning the sincerity of ADP`s post when he said "As far as everything He's [Clapton] ever said and done, He was, is, and always will be correct." With all of the recent controversy w/ EC`s recent comments towards COVID etc, his statement can easily be taken to be sarcastic which is why i asked him--he`s been accused a being a 'troll' elsewhere on this forum. [And also his replies to me afterwards have been kinda 'curt'/abrupt'/condescending.]

Here`s a good one that might not be too well known [but maybe it is] as I believe he is playing 'Beano' here.

When he did From The Cradle I went okey dokey it's all falling into place, Gibsons and Fender amps, then followed Me and Mr Johnson some years later.
He's lead the way with the Blues, guitars and amps, an all round soulful player and singer, God bless him.

I enjoy most of his early stuff, there is no denying his tone. I couldn't care less about what he or any other entertainer thinks about covid, I make my own decisions and I come here for guitar/music conversation. Just my two cents.

E.C. has always been it for me I always come back to his playing and find something new to soak up. there are ebs and flows to the level with which i am into his stuff but it always comes back around its just good.

hes not the most technical hes not the most creative, hes not the biggest showman. but he is the sum of his parts and what he plays just really works at least for me and my ears

I totally agree. That’s why his take on the blues is interesting. At least to me.

He is a legend for what he did before 1972.

He is still a great player at times, but his legendary work is all more than 50 years old.
