So I bought one of the Epiphone slash anaconda burst LPs and stripped it down and stripped it down. I’m looking forward to sharing all of the pictures and measurements of the internals but right now I am needing to remove the headstock veneer and I’m wondering if anyone knows, is that or wood that they used for the headstock veneer?

I’ve been having a problem getting the Raper under it no matter how much I heat it up and I slipped and scraped it a little bit and I’m leaning towards the whole thing is plastic but it’s possible I just scraped off the top clear coat .

It's probably phenolic resin just like the USA production guitars.

How far back has Gibson USA been doing this please ?

From what I've gleaned the transition commenced in 1971, with 1972 seeing it on all guitars. Of course, until the journey to Historic / Custom Shop reintroduced holly veneers.

A follow-up question would be, which other special / custom models in the intervening years got something else...?

Well, I am pretty sure there are maple headstocks on Customs, not sure of others.

Seems like something @Strings Jr. would be well positioned to comment upon!
