• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Dead Spots

I've got dead spots on both my guitars, and I don't know what to do about them. One has it on the B string, 12th fret; the other has it on the B string, 10th fret. Both are really annoying... I've tried running CA glue under the frets, but that hasn't helped. Do I need really thin glue? Or does the wood at that spot just *not* want to sustain? I get almost instant octave notes at these spots.

Thank you!

Hmmmm, a good setup can sometimes take care of these dead spot problems. Have you tried that? Also, adding mass to the headstock can shift the dead spot to where it's unnoticeable. You could try one of those 'fatfingers' or something, even heavier tuners or tuner knobs.
good luck,

Hmm... I'm pretty good at setting up my guitars, and I don't think it's that. I did, in fact, try attaching things to my headstock: I clamped two 4" (I think) C-clamps onto my headstock. All it did was make the neck a lot heavier, and put some dents into my headstock!

Thanks anyway though!! :)

Any other ideas, folks?

dead spots

What settings are you using on the neck, bridge and nut, both E strings?

Umm, let's see here: the action goes from 4/64" (high E) to 6/64" (low E), measured at the 12th fret with no capo. The nut action runs approximately .010" over the first fret on the high E, to about .015" on the low E. Neck relief is about .010". The pickups aren't too high, either. No closer than 6/64" to the strings when fretted at the last fret.

Hope that helps (you help me...)!

Your setup should not be causing you problems (with the numbers you gave). Look for loose or improperly seated frets. Try adding some mass to the headstock and see if the dead spots move.

where are the dead spots

Where exactly are the dead spots? What do you have to do to get the dead spot to occur?

I have the same problem and its because the neck has a little dip in it and its hitting the tops of the frets further down the neck causing the higher frequcies like harmonics
