Hi all -- I have a 2004 LP Standard, and a 2007 LP Standard. the 2004 is all black with cream colored binding, and the 2007 is a gold top with transparent sides and back. They've got the exact same hardware, and I was noticing that the 2004 feels "much heavier" than the 2007. I did some searching online and realized that 2007 was the year Gibson started chambering Les Paul bodies to reduce weight. So I got out my scale to weigh them, figuring it was gonna be like 2-3 pounds difference. Not so much. The 2004 weighs 9.6lbs and the 2007 weighs 9.0lbs. This has me wondering is my 2007 even chambered? Or is it just the normal variation between guitars of the same design? I mean... I guess the 2004 has more paint on it but probably not a half pound of paint!
In any case, that little bit of weight difference is really noticeable on the shoulder (in a positive way), although conversely, the extra heft (albeit slight) of the heavier one has kind of a confidence-inducing feel to it.
Tonally, I had been thinking the lighter one seemed a bit brighter, and the heavier one a bit smoother, but I'm not really sure I believe that this small of a weight difference could be affecting the tone. My guess is that it's other factors.
