• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

    9 0643 and 9 0696 "Grainger-Burst" up for auction at Heritage

Sweet mother of mercy. The whole damn collection. That’s it’s own rare guitar shop going up all at once.

    NGD- GAS'ing for something different

I very much agree with what you’re identifying there. My 1996 Special DC is a bit hotter and crunchier so it is pretty much rock all the time but the magnetic strength in my 1960 Junior has weakened a bit and has major similarities with a Tele bridge. At least until you hit about 8.5 on the...

    NGD- GAS'ing for something different

I personally love P90s, including that single bridge pickup in a Junior, but there is also a very good reason that a number of guitars are set up with a P90 at the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. Either way, you’re not wrong. I’ve always liked that I could get a lot of crunch out of a P90...

    Making the Custom Shop plunge...

I've just been enjoying the CS posts and pics too much and I had to join in the fun. Now added to the wall, a 2014 R0. It has been living with a good friend of mine since he bought it new and I thought from the first time I picked it up that I'd like to add it to my collection instead. We...

Historic LP JR DC pickup height

To be fair, where one person sees a faulty build quality, another sees "true historic spec" in action. On my 1960, I can't set my action as low as I'd like because I bury the strings into the front of the pickup cover. So I set them a little higher and just turn everything up.

1970 SG Special - buy or run away?

(As is often the case) Big Al is right on the money here. It's in working condition and it would seem you've been given some assurances that it should hold together. If it sounds like the flamethrower is is supposed to be, and the price reflects its condition and that its not a museum piece, let...

Just How Hard Is It To Write an "Original" Song?

I'll never forget the best song I ever wrote. It was divine inspiration. It popped into my head almost like a fully formed concept. I immediately had the big chord opening with a lead hook over it. There was a very easy pocket for the rhythm section to sit in. Nothing fancy, but it hit hard from...

    Possibly Interesting Sheraton

Not to hijack the thread right off the bat but I just wanted to add in that Primer is a good dude. Had a helluva night with him and a couple buddies about 10-15 years ago at Kingston Mines. He would just come and sit with us between his sets and hang while the second act went on the other stage...

NGD: Chicago Music Exchange 1958 LP

My last 5 guitar buys have all been from them including the 1960 Junior a week or so ago. They’ve always been incredibly nice and helpful when I’ve been in shop and it’s now at the point where Josh and Karl just grab something off the wall and hand it to me when I walk in because they know what...

New addition to the wall (and this Pub)

Thank you much. Honored to be part of the crowd here with this thing. I hope to give it a good home for a good long while before it moves on to the next caretaker.

New addition to the wall (and this Pub)

And a fantastic piece (or two) of wood it is. Just an incredibly warm, resonant sound. Similar, but so different from my mid 90s Special DC.

New addition to the wall (and this Pub)

Wasn't really expecting to ever be able to start a thread on this pub but then this week happened. Meet Ethyl (M. Ethyl Key-Tone). She's a real stripper. Apparently someone didn't like the finish. Original bridge is lost to time. Original tuners are safely sealed in the case. All else is...

What amp and pedals should I get?

What size room are trying to fill with sounds? If you’re looking to practice/play in home and maybe play out occasionally, I’d actually suggest something like a Boss Katana (50W?) where you can get a million different tones and see what you want to sound like. For under $200, you can pick one up...

90 's les paul standard quality

I think the mid-90s were just a generally good era for much of what was coming out of Gibson USA. Sure there are some dogs in the bunch, but generally those guitars don’t get enough credit. My main has been a 1996 Special DC and it consistently surprises me how good it is and how well it has...
