A good friend of mine sent me a picture of an R9 for sale that looked more like a tomato than a guitar, but I trusted him and called the seller.

(paraphrased)
Me: Hi there...you sure it's a flame? Because it looks like a tomato from where I am.
Seller: Haha not to worry; a guitar that is actually a monster that just happens to look like a tomato in a photo is much better than a guitar that looks killer in photo but is actually a tomato.
Me: Can't argue with that. I'll meet you right now.

So I went over to his place, and discover that he is a professional studio/session man who is more into customs with floyd roses and mutant fenders than old gibsons.

I ask, "Where's the guitar? :)" completely oblivious to the fact that he was holding it, for I didn't expect that beauty to be mine. He handed it over, and I immediately lost it. The proverbial cherry sunburst, light as my strat, spanky and loud like a loud tele, and the truss rod/neck relief balance situation all ace.

Here it is. Fortunately I have better photos than the seller, but the tone of this thing is keeping me from getting my real camera.

I only call "tomato" the ones from the 60s AKA "tomato soup"!

I'm still over the moon with this thing. The previous owner is more of an Ibanez shredder guy so he said he had to let this go. His loss my gain ;)

The price was fair for an R9 but for this particular R9 I think I got the better end of the deal :)

Went for color and flame...no aged this no faded that...as close as I can get it to when they all had strong red coming straight out from the factory.

Having not lived in the states for quite some time now, I consider 50 miles of driving quite the chore now, but I've forgotten about the long drive already :)

It's not actually very chunky, and I like it for that reason. Chunky necks do sound great I think, and they can add to stability, but for lack of a better expression, I like it when I can't really "feel" the size or shape of the neck so I can concentrate on my playing. U-necks, really thick GT necks are not for me. 60s fender necks and 59 gibson necks I like, not so skinny that they become/feel flat though :)
