• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

1980s Moderne reissues

Specifically, there's a 1980s Moderne that was recently listed on Gbase.com that is being offered by a guitar store that still has the guitar its inventory. That is, this guitar was apparently ordered by the store in 1983 and has still never actually been sold.

I know of a music store, near me, that the owners put one away, back in the 80's. I bet they still have theirs too, makes me curious.

Would the production precodes be the same for the V and Explorer? Thanks.
The same letter-prefix system did apply to the 1980s Heritage series Flying V's, yes. Not entirely sure about the corresponding Explorers, though, mainly because so few appear to have been made. The various circa-1982 examples that I've seen of those, have all had eight-digit impressed (rather than stamped) serial numbers.

Also, based on direct observation, I can recall at least one instance in which an unmodified 1980s Moderne and an unmodified 1980s Heritage series Flying V had exactly the same serial number — which would lead me to believe that the two models, although they used identical numbering formats, did not share a single numbering sequence. In other words, having seen the two "overlapping" guitars that I came across, I suppose it's possible that you could have a Moderne numbered as "D 099" and then also a Flying V numbered as "D 099," too.

Aside from there possibly being overlap between the Modernes and the V's, I've also noticed that the V's will typically get into the "100" serial number range (e.g., s/n B 108), whereas Modernes that are numbered past "099" are seldom seen, actually I don't know if I've ever seen one exceed 100.

Very cool — you should ask them about it!

As far as I know, House of Guitars still has an "A"-series example on their sales floor (well, actually up a bit high above their sales floor) that is still unsold from when they originally received into their inventory in the early 1980s.

Wow. Has it been on the rack the whole time? I have A77, but bought it used. Love the guitar. Funny that one would sit unsold that long. It's ugly, but it is a vintage design these days.
If I recall correctly, yes — it's been on display since 1982 or 1983. The last time I checked (which was about a year or so ago), the price they were asking was like $9,995.00 or something like that — so, my humble prediction is that at that price, it will sit unsold for at least another few decades.... :hee

The specific guitar to which I'm referring has, by the way, been advertised continuously right here on the Les Paul Forum for about two and a half years (click here to view posting).

Old thread, I know.
I got mine a few years ago in unplayed condition. I had to sell it when I was having money problems. I can't date it, but I have a photo of the full case candy, which is usually not complete when I see them for sale. It was very heavy.

Sorry to bring this thread to life again
What would be a realistic price for a 80s ri, all original and in very good condition (only some finish checking)
On reverb they estimate the price 3700-5000, but 1 sold for 2600$ 6 months ago and now there are availible around 4400$.
I' in Europe, but it's already difficult to get a US price.

These are hard to price. I'd say anything more than $4.5K is full retail...If you can grab one for around $3.2-$3.3K I'd say it was probably not a bad deal.
