• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

How do you keep your vintage Les Pauls safe?

The only working guitarist I personally know
who plays a Burst on tour has had it's original neck removed and stored. He plays his 59 burst with a replacement neck. Serves two purposes: non burst serial number to attract crooks, and obviously no damage done if the headstock breaks. He also takes a 60 with him but has not taken the same precaution.

That's a little on the extreme (and absurd) side. I struggle with the logic here, and imagine that if it has a replacement neck it's likely for another reason. And I'm averse to popping the necks out of old fenders.......

Particularly when there is another unmolested burst right next to it.

I'm sure the next owner will appreciate that precaution. It'll save him about a hundred grand.:hee

That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard.
Some people think a little too "outside the box."
That's my nice way of saying they're idiots, btw.

More like thinking OUT OF THEIR MIND!
I won't even separate the necks from my 50s Fender guitars.

No offense to you, but I don't believe this.
It just doesn't make sense.

He may as well do what Francis Rossi from Status Quo used to do to his Teles so no one would pinch them: he'd drill large holes through the bodies of his guitars. Has the same effect: you end up with a great sounding and playing but almost worthless guitar. Makes no sense to me.

Do you mean at home or at a gig? Home there is an alarm system. If not shut off in one minute police are on their way. It would take a "stranger" a few minutes to run around the house before they found my guitar room. Busted before they get there and away. Otherwise, it would have been a job by an acquaintance. At a gig, the average bar fly has no idea what kind of guitar I am playing and could not care less. Still, at a gig I keep my Gibson's in full view. I have been known to take my Les Paul to the can between sets.

I did get a quick wake up call one time. I took a Les Paul to a gig in the 50's Lifton case. That case set off some alarms for some guitar wise bar patrons. I have been using non-Gibson cases since then and the Lifton's stay in the house.

I cant believe someone just suggested that there is a man out there, popping the necks off of 1959 Les Pauls, so he can play them out somewhere. I have
heard a lot of ridiculous guitar myths in my time, but I got to say, that's a a dandy !
