• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

What mods have you done to a 2013 R7,R8,R9

I haven't rec'd the ones I ordered yet but I will let you know once they are on. I will be excited if they are the same as the stock strings. Will keep you posted- bending was particularly what I liked about them.

@dfljames, just curious.. given the changes you already made, do you think the pickup covers are authentic enough, or did you change the covers too?

corpse, do you find those d'addario strings ok for bending? I always had an aversion to their stock strings as I found them terrible for bends, although I'm sure they sound good for strumming :peace

I never had any problems bending them. As they seem to be a quality brand and one I use, what is it that you feel is inhibiting your bending on them???

I have not made any changes on my 2013 Lemonburst R9.
It feels and sounds great as it is.

Changing anything will NEVER make it real deal 1959 Les Paul Standard, and I will never play like Jimmy Page. Why try to fool myself believing that?
I've wasted time and money in the past to try to do mods in attempt to make a so-so guitar (in my mind) significantly "better".

That's kinda like a teenager buying Lebron's signature NIKEs and expecting to play like a star baskeball player.

I changed strings after a month in the stable; I scraped the inside of the nut to remove any stray glue and polished the frets with some 4/0 steel wool. THe shop had intonated it well. It came out remarkable brighter- I used the Gibson Reissue strings and they had the same great action as I found the originals did.
Coincidentally I had to change a preamp tube in the amp I had set up so I can't say specifically it was all the strings. I also replaced the switch ring and tip, and put in a set of home-dyed Dimarzio rings. I have to order a PG.
BTW this guitar weighs 9 lbs.

I didn't change a single thing. if I could change anything it might be to brass thumbwheels just to see if it indeed warms up the cleans. No need to, just curious if it does. However I'm not sure where to get brass thumbwheels. lol

All in all though, I have owned a lot of guitars in my years. And right out of the box this thing is the nuts. I have spent hours setting up guitars - this one needed absolutely NO tinkering. At all. First ever in over 25 years that a guitar plays perfectly out of the case. That says a lot about Gibson.

After spending time with both of mine, I found that the Volume Pots have got to go. Very fast taper with ALL the action happening in the first quarter turn. Some must like that, but not me. The Tone pots seem OK, but the Volume pots are useless for how I play. I use them a lot.

On this one point I must agree. I only notice it on the neck pickup. From 10 to 9 drops it about 50%. I thought it was a dud until I read through the forums and found that this seems to be normal. I'm tempted to change it out as I too use the volume knob extensively. I would love to access the volume between 10 and 9. lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I recently acquired a 2013 SG and I love the guitar, but hate the pots. With pedals, I get a fuller range from the pots, but with just a cable and amp, the SG is screaming at 10 and mud after 8.5. I'm used to playing my controls as much as anything else, so this is driving me crazy. For those of you that replaced your wiring, what did you choose, and are you happy? Thanks in advance.

my flippin playstation however needs a mod to stop double posting.

Nah, that's how we know it's not an imposter.

I agree the new guitars don't NEED tweaking. But I just can't keep from fiddling with mine. Like you, mention, the volume pots are the first thing to go. My preference is RS Superpots because of the more linear (but still audio) sweep.:##

I swapped out the stock harness for an MSSC harness, played with swapping some plastic parts, and replaced my jack plate for a nickel one because the stock one broke.

Well I bought this 2013 with replaced Braz fretboard/inlays, nitro, plastic and reshaped neck to a closer match to a '59. All other parts original. Sounds and plays fantastic. Best RI Les Paul I've had; this is after probably 20.

My Shanks did not per say need anything. I did however replace the volume pots with RS superpots and install some Throbaks. The custom buckers sounded good but not as good as the Throbaks to my ears. It is a beast now. I really hated to change anything on a CC but it is my number 1 now and gets played all the time and I love it dearly.
