Hi

I recently purchased a 2001 gibson les paul. It is all stock.... Smaller narrower headstock and burstbuckers pros. I also read that the first year of the burstbuckers in les paul standards was 2002 but some later 2001 models went out with 2002 specs. Is this true? My 2001 does have burstbuckers and the seller says it's all stock. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I heard that it was into 2002 that the BBs were installed. I understand that there were other changes made for the 2002 year that '01 and previous do not have.
I suppose, knowing Gibson, that some late '01s may have the BBs. Do you know when in the year it was made?

Thanks for the response. Well to answer your question I think the seller was wrong in saying that it was a 2001. The serial number is 019250508. If I read it correctly it's in face a 2005 les paul standard.

Right?

If so no big deal as I really like the guitar, but that may answer my question.

'02-'08 is my favorite non-vintage, non-custom shop era.

that serial # indicates it's an '05.
first and fourth digits are the year. positions 2, 3, and 4 are the day of the year, and the last - usually 3, but often 4 is the number of guitar that day.
so yours was the 192 day of 2005 - July 11th. the 508th guitar to pass through numbering that day.

Personal preference more than anything. Aesthetically I like everything about it (except for the Nashville bridge) nickel hardware, narrow headstock, klusons, tophats, pickups (I'm one of maybe three people in this world that likes Pro's) and more specifically I like the '06-'08 chambering, satin finish (mine's a Faded) and the name "Standard" instead of "Traditional."

I played a 2002 Standard that just killed. Different, yet it rivaled an 2003 R7 with Brz. board for playability. I couldn't decide which one I wanted and ended up losing out on both.

The change occurred mid 2001. The whole guitar was revamped top to bottom. Neck choices, BB's, nickel, knobs, tuners, graded tops , more colors , etc. Easy way to tell, if it's got Grover's and speed knobs it's early 2001. Klusons and top hats, later 2001. Failing that, just pull out one the pups and see what it says.
