• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The wood of my fretboard is a little bit uneven / bubbly

Hey there!

This is my first post!

I have a question for you guys.
I just added a Gibson Les Paul from 1980 to my collection. The neck feels a bit uneven on the flat surfaces of the wood on the fretboard.
Its hard to photograph, but you can definitely feel if when you go over this with your finger.

Is this a common issue? Its not such a big deal while playing, but i kind of feel it while playing.
Should i worry that my fretboard wood is warping in some way?
And do you have any experience with maybe sanding the wood lightly to a flatter surface? (would be done by a luthier, not me)

Thanks for taking some time to read my post,

Cheers!

It's just been played a lot. Badge of honor, that, probably a good sounding guitar.

It's a natural phenomenon from playing (with lower frets). A badge of honor as they say, and the only thing it needs is more playing, and then a refret once you're practically down to the wood, in which case the process would involve lightly levelling the fretboard (or not, if you choose to maintain the patina).

Thanks!

Now the guitar is stringed and set up i dont feel it while playing. Without the strings on it, it was very noticeable.

Cheers!
