• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Great info Prog.:salude
Agreed the same from 70-72.
Why do you think the heels changed and were so different in 73-74?

I dont know. :)

Perhaps cause the production numbers were much higher in 73 and 74 (especially Customs), that the inconsistency in construction went bigger.

73-74 saw quite a few anomalies .
Caps at least 4 different/ pots 500k> to 250 / 2 piece tops / Standards/
Neck size varies. wiring channel relocation/ weight seems to
all over the place too. More color options/
From kinda assuming what was going on at the time
Sounds like too many cooks in kitchen. Good and bad.
But as Prog and I are finding, customs and deluxes were given
different attention at different times. Causing some confusion in comparing
deluxes and customs from 74-76.
Apples and oranges at times.
For me, whoever was shaping those few large heel/big neck 73-74 `s :salude

ALMOST enough to make you wonder if the Custom went down it's own line...:hmm

There are differences between same year Customs and Deluxes (and factory humbucker Standards pre '76)
that would make one think they weren't being made in the same manner...and obviously hand sanding will create numerous variations on the SAME model..

I also am finding out these things out...and just when you think there is a trend, or a solid trait, there is ALWAYS that oddball, totally legit, and 100% Gibson made, that will screw it all up.

That's part of the fun to me!:jim

Another thing I've noticed, and this thread points it out, is the location of the toggle switch cavity cover's screws...
All over the place!! Even between our '76's..and compare Prog's 70 to the '73..
Any noted trends in that?:hmm

Never noticed that before. I guess as long as the 3 screws
match pattern, no problem. Cool info.

Exactly, this 70-76 era is very fascinating, you can still find something new. They began to produce more and more pieces in 73 and 74, perhaps because of this fact its a bit more chaotic timespan.

Like you found with the toggle switch cavity screws. This is new for me. :dude:

P.S. i just checked some newer LPs and even Custom Shops do have this similar chaotic, the screws are all over the circle.

I wonder if this could be used as a solid Kzoo vs Nashville build location (late 74, 75, 76, up to mid '77) indictor somehow?
If Nashville was the "hard tooled" facility, then those holes should be in the exact same spots on all of them..(with MINOR tolerances as to be expected)

No, my former both 79 Nashville made LP Customs have had different location too. :)

They must've been a hand operation then, ie: still a guy with a drill. Must be a hand fit part..

And I have had more than one where the screws weren't centered on the lip of the cavity, and blew out the sides of the toggle cavity..control cavity too.

I will have to ask my buddy Randy how they did it.

I have seen this too. :) Simply very inconsistent timespan in terms of construction and overall quality control.

i have to say that the period from '70-'75 is really intriguing from the standpoint of the range of features as well. Think about it: reflector knobs vs speed knobs vs witch hats, changing Gibson inlays, changing decal placement, bridge retainer wire or not, metal vs. nylon saddles (totally random), growing and shrinking volutes, various shapes and tapers of necks, sunbursts on every surface except front of peg head or only on the front of the body, and chrome hardware with nickel Kluson tuners.

Got the large heel up and running with a set of Dunc`s.
Vintage P-90 N and the humbucker under P-90 bridge.
Nice combo. I`ll play it next practice.
The original Mini`s were there, but the bridge had been taken out
and replaced with something before I got it.
They also squealed a bit. Which out of 7 old Jrs and a few LSLp`s
none of those will. Same amp.
So the Mini`s are and never have been up to par for me.
Just sayin. This is a nice non-intrusive up grade.

NICE!

Love those inlays!

What did you ever think of the Dimarzio DLX, the P90 sized Super Distortion?

Well it was a obvious switch. Both pickups are bridge pickups,
but the P-90 /Sp-90 sounds alot better in the bridge position.
Sweet guitar.
