I realize that things change ... taste, talent, likes and dislikes. And over the years, styles and sounds become more progressive. What I, as a Geezer, found to be awesome at one time, kids of today find old-fashioned and bland.

Well ... a friend and I were in Guitar Center out my way a few weeks back, and on the store monitors was Led Zeppelin live. Bonham was in the middle of a solo. A young kid standing next to me turns to his friend and says, "That's John Bonham. He sucked."

Well, needless to say, I was quite perturbed. But I handled it well, and tried to explain to the young kid that, no, John Bonham didn't suck. He just thought I was a geezer, though. Oh, well.

Just like in all aspects of life in America everything is dumbed down and that includes Music. Last year I had a parent teacher conference with one of my Daughter's math teachers and for like 15 minutes he is talking about estimating. I am figuring he is talking about estimating in like rounding numbers etc.. Turns out he was talking about that as long as the student shows they know the methodology for a math problem it is considered correct even if the answer was wrong... This blew me away as Math is one of the true perfect sciences.. This is just one example, why learn how to play the modes and leads when you can strap on a guitar learn 3 chords and never progress. It has nothing to do with leads being out of fashion it really has to do with the lack of dedication in America's youth today. I really believe alof of it is the liberal school systems.... They coddle these kids and teach them nonsense.

On a positive note I did see Maiden twice this summer and it was shocking to me how many young (15-16) kids were there and loving it... They knew all of the words to the old tunes etc...

Liberal school systems where teachers can't get the kids to do anything because the parents have never made the kids do anything except "go play your video games and get out of my hair"? Or threaten to sue the schools and teachers because the school wants the kids to act right and do their work?

I believe the problem is parents who could care less about their kids and expect teachers to raise them.

You obviously care or you wouldn't have gone to the conference. You wouldn't believe how many parents won't return a phone call much less show up at a parent teacher conference.

You are correct the parenting in some cases is so bad it should be illegal for some of these parents to have kids.... This is the worst problem of all. But I do find some of the things taught to kids these days (like my math example above) to be ridiculous.

Although this thread has gotten far off the track of music (and John Bonham), I'll join in again anyway. I've known a bunch of parents that ended up having kids just to find out that they not only couldn't handle parenting, but couldn't handle kids, being married, life, and everything that goes along with it. They just gave up and then sat back and blamed everything on everybody else. They're the worst of all, and don't even know it. That's the biggest problem: They don't even know how much they suck.

When I was a teenager I appreciated just about all genres of music, probably because my dad is a musician and he turned me on to all sorts of cool stuff that I would have otherwise never heard.

Me also. (except Disco)

You just ran into a dumb kid. He might wise up but I'm sure there are plenty of kids out there that appreciate all types of music.

"Bonham sucked but that guy from Creed rules"!!:lol2 :lolspin :)spin

Keep in mind that young adolescents SPECIALIZE in blurting out incredibly idiotic statements!

I think the actual problem is that some kids might judge by sight not sound. In other words, if they see someone like Neal Peart playing a mega set of drums galore, and then someone like Bonzo playing a 'set', they judge by what they 'see' as opposed to actual drumming ability. Granted, Peart is an excellent drummer, but Bonzo didn't need all that stuff back then to complete his sound with Zeppelin, even if the technology was readily available.

"ive never heard anything by these. whats a good song to download by them?"

This was cut & pasted from a thread about Rush on another forum that tends to have a large number of younger people on it. I don't know what amazed me more, the fact that this alleged guitar player has never heard a Rush song, or the fact that he unapologetically intends to download their music, which is something that really bothers me about younger people these days-they all want something for nothing.

Not to highjack here but A-f@#$ing-MEN! My wife is a middle school special ed math teacher here in teh big bad city. Some of her kids can't hit the ball (or any ball for that matter) but most are just lazy, ungrateful, undisciplined POS brats from crappy homes. My wife gets called all kinds of stuff to her face. The administration won't throw the kids out because they feel its better to have 'em in school than out. I'm sure federal funding of schools has a role here too. However, I'm not sure how I feel about the whole scenario; it definitely reeks...

Teachers have no rights, administrators have no balls and parants have no accountability. No Child Left Behind is a joke.

Teachers need to be allowed to blast kids on the ass with the paddle when they get out of line like in the old days. The biggest problems I see with kids these days is that they have zero discipline, zero accountability, and poor behavior is often attributed to some condition or whatever that allows parents to medicate them with the lastest drugs.

Snags, right on !! My grandmother taught school for 52 yrs., wore out many paddles(on me alone) yet cared about the students progress, as if her very job depended on it...back then it was... and that CHILD in GC should've been led to a VCR where he could've watched JHB do his thing on "Song remains the same" video. Bonham rocked...

The problem with that is many of these "kids" are big, disrespectful, unaccountable and ignorant enough to exhibit threatening and violent behavior without a clear understanding of the consequences.

The real consequence comes after teh kid is out of school and is a loser with no prospects and leads a taxpayer subsidized life of mediocrity. Only they don't know that they are losers, that their options are limited. And everyone else is stuck paying for the kid's fuck ups.

OTOH, Bonham was irreplaceable, artists aren't deveolped today and much modern rock/pop IMO lacks substance. If only you could have paddled that snot nose kid...

"Suck" still doesn't mean "Cool" I guess. Kids generally only like what their friends like. Everything else sucks. Unfortunately, what their peers like is usually dictated by media and marketing.

Hopefully, the twerp will realize how talented and relevant Bonham was if he decides to think for himself or Zep becomes as cool as the Beatles are for college kids now.

Regarding the school/parent issue, last Sundays paper had a section on our school system and there was one quote that stood out above all other information.

"In a school of 1200 students, only 30 parents are involved in the our PTA."

Parents are the teacher's best aid.

There's a high skool age kid that works here at the office afterschool that does the 'clean up'. You literally have to follow him around and tell him what to do or it won't get done.
The mere sight of the way he carries himself makes me want to reach over & slap him across the noggin. (shoulders slumpped, drags his feet etc...) And this moron is in the top 10% of his senior class!!!

And I get yet another dose of this scum bag today @ 3:45. Ohboy. Thank god he doesn't speak much.

This sounds so familiar. When the new Zeppelin How the West Was Won set came out I was browsing through some cd's in the music section of Barnes and Noble. In walk two kids (around 14 years old each) dressed in Nu-metal tshirts. They see me holding the Zeppelin cd and walk by and say "Zeppelin Sucks" just loud enough so I can hear it.

...so I turned around and asked them why they though that :) They had no real answers, just wanted to say something to impress eachother I guess. They hadnt really listened to their music, just wanted to say something to get a reaction. Oh to be 14 again :)

Everyone goes through that phase as a kid to one degree or another. The older you get the less you know, so they say. At least the kids were interested in music, hopefully they will go through that 'who influenced my idols' search and discover that there is a lot of great music out there.
