Hi,

I'm looking to get a set of pickups for my 335 and I'm trying to find any sound or video clips of the Duane Cherryburst set. Any other recommendations for a '59 335 sound is also appreciated. I have a set of regular Wizz in my R9, but I haven't been pickup shopping in 5-7 years, so I'm not sure where to strat - the market is saturated.

Thanks!

I've read that Duane removed and installed the PAFs from his '57 Goldtop into the Cherryburst to retain the sound he preferred.
Those really early PAFs have a distinct tone that several boutique company's can apparently replicate really well.
It can't hurt to check them out.

www.throbak.com they have a nice selection of pickups to choose from . You could do a 101 or a 101 Plus with a little more output , or you could do a Pre T-301 , or a 70/ Select (T-Top) .These are killer and so awesome .

Lollar Imperials or Low Winds sound great with a semi hollow. I have a set of Bare Knuckle Mules in a CS 336 - love that too. Clear, warm and woody if you want, bright if you light up the treble setting and crunch if you crank.

Would you say that Lollar Imperials and BKP Mules have any similarity ?

I’ve never compared them side by side or in the same guitar - so my opinion is not precise. But I’d say the Low Winds, with slightly less muscle and more treble is closer to the BK Mules. Different magnets used by the 2 brands, but there is a sweetness and clear tone to the Lollar and the BK Mules. That goes for the Imperials as well. I have a neck Highwind in a Suhr Tele Style guitar and it also has a beautiful, warm tone

I'm a giant fan of the Wizz Laylas... I've got 2 sets done in vintage 50s wire that are my all time favorite aftermarket pups. One set in a Y2K Murphy Aged Yamano Spec Goldtop and the other in an Aged Allman Sig Cherryburst. They are absolute tone monsters!!!! 🤩

I'm not surprised you love the Wizz Laylas, they sound great in mthrunn's uploads. What is it that makes the Wizz Laylas your personal favourite ?

Just to follow up, I actually went with a set of Wolfetone Legends and I've been super pleased. I first had his Dr. Vintage set, but swapped for the Legends. Definitely amazing bang for the buck. They were around $200 with his Covid deal.

What’s the sound difference between the two? I had a set of Dr Vs - never tried the other.

Um, the legends just sounded right. The Dr. V's sounded a little weaker and darker. It's difficult to describe, but the Legends were on par with all the other high end boutique winders...I didn't think the Dr.V's were.
