• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Want a Reel to Reel for my studio. Looking for recommendations!

Ha! I'll bet that kind of took the wind out of the sails of your eureka moment. Oh well.
Yeah the stereo effect of the AGT is really cool.
Hey btw, try the Eventide Split EQ. Great plug! Splitting the tonal and transients is great! A friend of mine suggested that and now I use it a lot.
I thought the Split EQ was great but I had a latency issue no matter how I used it. I think it does not getting along with UAD hardware for whatever reason.

Never noticed that. I am running UAD alongside but I have UAD plugs running DSP over there. Maybe some of your plugs are processing intensive. I do see the PT CPU and Memory meters moving, but not a problem for me. So I think that a computer could bog down if it is not "fast" with lots of memory. Maybe you need to bump something up a bit.

If you hate the sound of ProTools no matter what mic preamp you're using I don't really know what to say because by that logic I would imagine dumping something recorded on tape into PT will degrade it to the point of being unlistenable. Maybe buy a few boxes of razor blades and do it all old school.

A tape machine is probably going to make things worse imho. What are you using for mics? Can we hear some examples of your sterile recordings to get an idea of what your setup sounds like?

I wouldn't bother. The cost of tape and getting a good deck up and running (and keeping it that way) isn't worth it). Some of the tape simulators are getting very close. I think the UA Studer is almost there, there's a little difference in the low end, but nothing that I could notice if I were not a/bing right there.

I used the Tascam r2r four-track when I was younger. I sold it to someone a few years ago and couldn't believe anyone would want it. To get into a really nice deck you're going to need a console, wiring, space, etc. Just doesn't seem worth it.

I still have my Otari Mkiii. The Otari decks are the only ones I would look into for affordable multitrack decks. They're serviceable and were pro machines, not so much in recording studios but in the broadcast world. When I see the Fostex and Tascam machines, I just think you're buying someone else's problem. If I were looking at a TSR/MSR series or the Fostex R-8/E-16 sonically and reliability wise I think you'll be sorry. YMMV.

I have a soft spot for those machines because of nostalgia, but I wouldn't want one. Also, remember your tape machine needs to be calibrated, aligned, etc.?

This is mine:
