How much different/similar do they sound?

Is it just the switching that makes them different?

Jazzmaster pickups are more “throaty” sounding. Obviously the pickup selection is more straightforward on the Jazzmaster vs. Jaguar.

I've wanted one of those Jazzmasters for a long time.
Chris Stapleton gets some great tones from his. Wow.

Yes hit the wrong switch on the Jaguar and you get nothing. :oops:;) But still a great guitar.

And I love how Fender decal appear and age on painted headstocks.

In addition to the diffence in pickups mentioned, the Jaguar is a short scale (24") and the Jazzmaster is a regular Fender scale (25,5").
