Funny this should come up. My other guitar player bought 3 sets of the new allparts buttons, 3 sets of the DMC bushings, and 3 sets of those single line klusons. Guess who got to change them all tonight. Anyway, I noticed the new klusons are a little different from the last time I worked with them. The shaft used to look like a knife blade inside the button, now they have a knurled shaft, and half of the buttons pulled off without any heat. believe it or not, THIS batch of the new allparts buttons weren't green at all, but were the exact color of the old allparts buttons I have on all of my guitars, and don't look too bad at all, but not "quite" as good as the older allparts buttons. Here's where the fun begins. I had to drill the hole in the new allparts buttons about 3/32"- 1/8" deeper to push them on farther than the original hole would allow. No problem, I put a piece of tape on the drill bit as a guide and blasted all 18 buttons in a few minutes, and the usuall pen torch on the shaft made it a breeze to push them on to the perfect depth, so it probably didn't take 10 minutes to put all 18 buttons on. Now comes the kicker, the frigging other shaft that fits through the press-in bushing on the new klusons are a smaller diameter than the original gibson tuners, and the DMC bushings have the same size hole as the original gibson bushings, so if you use the new klusons with the original gibson bushings OR the DMC bushings, you end up with a shitload of play in the bushing. The klusons come with their own bushings too, but as expected the original gibson tuner's shaft won't even fit into the kluson's bushing, because it's made smaller to fit their own shitty thinner shaft. It suddenly occured to me that Gibson is using this exact same combo on the new 02 R9, only with gibson's new style bushings, which are the same size as the DMC bushings,so if my thinking is right, shafts on the 02 R9 are going to be rattling like all hell. Oh boy.....

Once you get some string tension going, it's gong to pull the shaft tight with the bushing anyways.

I just ordered a set of buttons, dmc bushings, and klusons from daves .Someone tell me if this will work:take the back plate that says kluson on it and put it on the gibson tuners with the flat tops. The change the buttons to all parts and use the dmc bushings. Will that work?

I never tried that one, people tell me that once you unbend the tabs that hold the back cover on, they'll break off when you go to rebend them. Its something I really want to try, I hate the word "can't".

I've got two sets of klusons on order and i'm going with the stock bushings and tuners. I'm not making vintage guitars, after all. Heck, Ive got a set of gold grover kluson-clones with the screw in bushings and I might use those on something too insead of returning them. What's the performance advantage of press-in vs screw in bushings? I can't think of anything but the 'vintage vibe', and that's satisfied enoguh for me with the press-inbushings on the new klusons.

Those Kluson-style tuners with the screw in bushings suck stinky ass. The tabs loosen up and fall apart. :dead:

If anyone has the time to post pics of these parts, I'd be grateful. I'd like to see how they look compared to Lou's buttons and Gotoh Kluson Klones.
