This is like

This would be like lowering the suspension on a car and then adding air shocks to raise it back up again. That would be silly. Instead, everyone worldwide should abandoned this silly idea immediately and simply raise the stop bar. The TOM/Stop Bar was designed for this. Les Paul himself was reportedly so happy to get rid of that old wraparound bridge that he went out and bought a new Porsche!
The first Gibson equiped with Tune-o-matic and stop tailpiece was the Les Paul Custom in late '53/early '54. The picture in the '55 catalogue shows the Les Paul Custom top wrapped.

I have a Les Paul that felt stiff, and I just brought the tailpiece up. What is the difference?

Has anyone tried wrapping and running some of the normal ways with different strings to see which feels best? This seems like something a YT or TGP person would do.

Then, there could be custom wound strings optimized for over/standard wrapping, and each string could be a different material and customized for $49.99 a set.

I can see the threads arguing the top wrapped .010 vs the standard .010, each being an esoteric blend of nickel, steel, platinum, etc. Of course if you're using something different for the next string it would negate the whole argument and need to be debated again and again!

Almost Famous (for walking away from it...) --

"Bow selector: Jimmy Page in 1969. Although he top-wrapped his Les Pauls early on, he actually changed to string-through later. We need to ask him why one day!"

Because one day he said to himself; "this stop bar, it goes up and down, Ill just raise it up, through-string it, and do the same thing."

the only way I would wrap a stop bar would be if the neck pitch was so great that the abr1 was jacked way high up to get a decent string action ..most of my vintage are conventionally strung with the bar raised around 1/8-1/4”

I don't know, I'm thinking of starting a custom string company to cater to the toan-chasing masses! Let me go roll some valves and change some pups and get back to you :P

These are different guitars. ?
I done it on the same guitar before. The only pics I got is of these 2 guitars right now. Next time I change strings I'll send pics of the same guitar if I remember.

This guy was once one of the greatest guitar players off all time and massively in demand, but then he started top-wrapping and it was all down hill from there. Recently someone heard him mumble "I should have just raised the stop bar."

I have been playing Les Pauls all my life and never once felt the need to top wrap.
