• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Toggle cover off or on while travelling

This may be a bit banal but as I'm new to all this I thought I'd just ask....recently bought my dream R9 and it is superb....couldn't be happier. Other than rehearsals and gigs it lives in its case with the toggle switch cover screwed off. Do most people detatch their toggle covers or leave them on while travelling in the case. It came with a cushion that fits over the metal pin but it only really fits when the plastic cover is removed. So what's the 'go' ? Leave it on while travelling or remove it...? or make the hole in the cushion bigger and leave it on with the cover on? Hope this isn't too banal

I unscrew my plastic toggle switch cap...and put the Styrofoam donut on all my Gibsons and Epis.....right or wrong i figure its safer..one time prior to a set...some idiot had put a big box of heavy crap on top of my case..I pushed all his junk off my guitar case...slightly flattened..but no damage to the guitar donut in place...

Hey thanks for responding.....I think you're completely right ......even though doing it makes me feel a bit more obsessive/nerdy/ etc than I already am for enjoying my guitar so much

I leave the toggle switch knob on unless I'm shipping a guitar, but...

One night I was getting my gear together to go to a jam session. My Les Paul was in its case with the case on its side (handle up). My leg brushed the case and it fell onto its face. I opened the case and the toggle switch knob was shattered! Dozens of little sharp pieces of plastic inside the case! If this had happened in shipping the guitar would've been scratched up.

The switch and guitar were fine, btw.

Because these guitars unfortunately move around in these Lifton cases.I take a new white T-shirt roll it up and put one on the guitars Top near the toggle switch, on my R9 and R0.leave the shirt or whatever piece of Cotton Towel...whatever...rolled up so its just puffed up enough, so that you feel a little resistance when you close the case. This basically acts as a pillow, to hold the guitar down and steady in the case as you move the case around. This way the guitar cant roll forward and hit the inside top of the Lifton Case.Basically turning it into an actual Guitar case.Like the Gibson USA ones.

These Lifton cases are beautiful, and built like a fortress, but they have a better chance of protecting the guitar from blunt trauma, from something hitting the case, then actually doing that, and actually holding and supporting the guitar

During transit I would remove it and thus protect it . Also as other posters have suggested to use the little pillow cushion which is a nice added protection .

Yeah man at the end of the day, why put a pillow over the switch tip to protect it, when its the entire guitar that is litterly swimming around in the case. The fact that the guitar can break its own switch tip, witch is common shows, that the guitar is moving around and bouncing around in the case.Thats also why some of these guitars arrive with broken headstocks, or in the case of my very first Historic, a beautiful 2016 R8, ....it arrived too me, with the bottom strap button screw bent to the side, and the button “Imbedded” into the bottom of the guitar. All the laquer cracked off around it, because the guitar bounced up and down in the case during transit. That year they didnt use the little grey foam blocks on the bottom, so i had to send it back, yes if your going to use the Lifton case to store your $$$$$ les paul, stuff the inside with a 100% cotton white towel or shirt, ...i for one am buying a couple Gibson USA cases to store them in

This is going to sound crazy, but get yourself a 1970 Univox Lawsuit LP case and park your Lifton. My '70s Standard has been one since the '70s without a casualty. The early '70s Gibson cases were less than desirable as well - you could feel the frame flex as you walked up a set of stairs. The Univox case looks like crap but protects pretty darn well. It does NOT have an arched top, though.

Smart move as a snug case is much better than getting knocked around while it's moving . Sometimes I just shake my head and wonder why ?

Even though this thread is from three years ago, your question about toggle covers while traveling with your R9 guitar is still relevant for many musicians. It's all about finding the best solution to keep your instrument safe and secure on the move. Removing the toggle cover for convenience is a common practice among guitarists, especially if it helps with storing the instrument in its case more comfortably.
Exploring different options to ensure the safety and protection of your guitar is essential, regardless of how long ago the question was asked. And if you're still gigging and traveling with your R9, considering options like cheap business class flights could make your journeys more comfortable and enjoyable.
