Hey folks,

I've always been wondering about Roger's guitars he was playing during his Supertramp-days (apart from his modded Strats). I did a search and found out that a fellow forum-member owns the Supertramp-burst and I would like to ask if anyone (if not the owner) could provide me some old or recent pictures of that certain guitar and some additional history. Roger is one of the most underrated LP'ers in my humble opinion but I've always loved his work ever since.

Thanks in advance!
Hans

Hi Macgyver, I bought Rogers burst from Gary's Classic guitars, Oct '01 at the Arlington Texas Guitarshow. The pic below was the one on Garys site.

Here is a PsychoDave checking it out at forum party in Texas last fall.

Then of course my avatar for the LPF.

I had a few shots of Roger playing it with the covers off showing the double whites. Someone here posted them and I saved them. I can't find them at this time. I'll have to look around. As far as its history goes, I believe Roger bought it originally from Norm Harris. I'm not sure when that was but it was at least in the mid 80's. Roger consigned it, or sold it back to Norm which is where Gary got it. I didn't know it was his when I bought it. I was told it was a celebrity but was not provided with the name. It didn't matter anyway. It was priced fairly and its a great burst on its own merits. An early '60 thats light as a feather (8lbs 1oz), with all '59 appointments.

I always dug Roger Hodgson's guitar parts on the older Supertramp stuff - he sure can rock.

And might I add one of my ALLTIME favorite Bursts! As Billy knows, I came w/in a knat's ass of buying this guitar just before the Arlington Show, when Billy bought it. A fine example of the marque, now owned by a MOST worthy player!:salude

I don't have the burst pedigree that The Monarch of Maple has, but I did get the chance to spend quite a bit of time playing that burst at the same gathering as psychodave in the picture Billy posted. That guitar has a neck pickup sound to die for. It's what finally got me off my ass to start putting PAFs in a couple of my own Les Pauls. :dude:

Love that little "piece" of flame and then NOTHING! So natural. I'm hard.

Here are those 2 shots from when Roger Hodgson used to own it. I knew I'd find them eventually! As you can see it was formerly Grovered. But they with the early Patent Pending type, that don't require reaming out the entire holes. The original bushings still fit fine.

Sorry for my late reply but thanks very much! Those pictures and especially the guitar on them are awesome. Thats my favorite burst, because of its history and all those memories connected to Roger & Supertramp.

By the way, I'm not sure but I can't get the thought out of my head that he played it on some concert back in the late 70's. I had that show on tape but I wasn't that much into guitars when I saw that years ago. Did he definetely not get that guitar before the 80's? I need to take a look at my old videotapes...

The two last pics are from the Munich-concert, right?

Thanks again!

I don't really know the date of when Hodgson bought 0 0288. Could very well have been in the 70's. Any history I have is 2nd hand info. IIRC, The pics I just posted were from a Munich video that someone posted here a while back.

Without taking this thread too far off-topic, modern Orient-made Grovers don't need the entire hole reamed out either. The height of the threaded bushing is the same on both models. It's just that most techs won't take the extra effort to ream the back only to the necessary depth. It's easier and faster to just ream all the way through to the face of the headstock. A shame, really, because you CAN install any Grover Rotomatics and not go all the way through if done with attention and care.

Someone already posted that Roger Hodgson Gibson LP Picture, but it was used (along with the finger cymbals) on the Munich Famous Last Words tour.

He also played Guild 12 string acoustic guitars, a Music Man Ernie Ball Steve Lukather model electric guitar, and a Natural, alienated Fender Stratocaster.

Very cool early 60!

However, on the 70s albums he used a Strat primarily? Does anyone know what amps he used in the studio in the 70s? I liked his use of the wah pedal as well. (y)

He did use a Strat.
My guess is Morley pedals. I know he used Fender Twin Reverb, Gibson, Marshall like amps, and a Fender Bassman amp, as well as a Roland Jazz Chorus and Mu Tron Pedal.
