• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Rick Nielsen also played bass on some Cheap Trick recordings after Tom Petersson first left in the Eighties.

I have to admit, I’m a bit concerned about the future of the vintage guitar community.

10 years ago, that “Burst” and that split headstock “Explorer” would have caused this thread to be be shut down.

This thread would have 20 pages of cumulatively intensifying responses already. People would be attacking each other and launching all kinds of accusations about who built those guitars, who sold those guitars, who knew, and who should have known.

Needless to say… I miss the old days 😆

Steve Lukather of Toto actually played the lead guitar on Voices, a session that he was allegedly paid $1,500 to play on. However, due to contractual difference he was not credited on the original release.

The split headstock explorer for starters.

I’ll add that the other two explorers are just to die for. Honestly, what a treat to get this level of quality footage of those two old gals and their respective cases.
But yeah… you can even see Mark’s face acting super uncomfortable praising the 3rd explorer like something just isn’t quite right.
I will say, it’s not really Mark’s place to question the authenticity of these guitars either. He’d never get another interview if he did that.

I will agree that 8-1008 and 8-4549 are amazing.

As has been stated before. Those suspect guitars should have been edited out.
Not trying to be a smart ass but, for what reason? To satisfy the vintage enthusiast? Maybe the internet armchair quarterbacks? And who would make the edits call? The video editor who has no idea? And I believe Rick is on the Board of Directors for Gibson. I would love to hear that conversation. “Hey Rick, we cut out the main guitars we came to see because we think they are misrepresented by you”.

I would think the target audience is buyers of new guitars wanting to be like their rockstar hero. Gibson doesn’t make a penny on a guitar they already sold 60 years earlier. But if some guitar hero pulls out a quilt top Les Paul and states it’s special, they just might sell a few hundred new ones.

I enjoyed the video for what it was. A cool look into a RRHF‘s collection.

If I owned a worldwide brand, and that brand had an official youtube channel, I want those videos to maintain the credibility of my spokespeople and authenticity of my product. Gibson should be the authority on its own products in its own videos, right? In a best case scenario, they have misidentified and misrepresented a Gibson built R9 as a vintage 1959 Les Paul, which devalues the brand. Or worse, an obvious fake was passed off as the real thing to their hired expert in the field.

Imagine an official Ferrari youtube video with an obvious kit/replica NART Spider passed off as an amazing example of an original car. "Let's just take it to Pebble Beach and not say anything because people have feelings". (y)

I am very sure a collector like Rick Neilson knows exactly what is what, and obviously he enjoys showing his trophies. At least people talk about it.
