Speaker for fender sounds

Setting up a pair of ISO cabs. 1 for fender sounds and the other Marshall. I have the Marshall side covered in terms of speakers but I am not sure where to look on the fender side. WGS has a few things that may be possible. The Eminence speakers I have tried sound good but are not "traditional Fender" sounds to my ear. What else is out there?

I have a long-enduring attachment to JBL D-120f speakers...for a 12 inch option.

I am so glad to have read a thread here describing Chris Merren's talents at restoring vintage speakers. I have a one of my D120f speakers in his shop right now. He is able to repair the original cone and voice coil ...so you still end up with "that" tone from the 21032 speaker cone/voice coil assembly.

Re-cones using contemporary materials are just not the same.

I used Weber clones of the P10R or P12R. Sounds just like a old Jensen once broken in good. And cheaper to blow a Weber than an original 50's Jensen!:ganz

I really don't like the RI Jensens... way too ice-picky for me. I have had them in a few vintage amps and have had a fantastic tonal improvement by going with any sort of Weber. They are fantastic speakers.

I'm not sure any of the expected choices are going to do much to sound "Fendery" in an ISO cab.

Everything will sound "Marshally" because of the closed, tight nature of the device.

SOOOOO much of the Fender sound comes from the open-back and relatively cheap cabs.

Just my opinion--worth what you paid for it.

hi!

I personally think that the reissue-Jensens are (let´s rather say "sound") better than their reputation.
Only this week i had the chance to A/B a ´68 Jensen C12Q vs. a RI Jensen C12Q - and while they didn´t sound "identical", the RI didn´t sound all that bad.
The highs and lows were very much alike, but the reissue lacked some midrange presence of the original, making it sound a bit more "hollow"/not as round/smooth in comparison.
After a couple of years of use it might be really close.

As for the Webers...
I´ve had a couple, and I don´t think they´re bad, but they´re certainly not what the marketing-hype would have you believe.
I liked most of the Alnicos I´ve tried, but some of the Ceramics were actually quite "ice-picky"...

Like, if you read the description of the 10F125 on their website, it says "Bright, later/smooth breakup, aggressive, articulate, loud, very loud" - and that´s just a polite way of saying "this speaker is so incredibly bright in an ice-picky sort of way that you will have to hear it yourself to believe HOW bright and LOUD it really is" ;-).

cheers - 68.

I've tried this numerous times, and Wilco is correct.

Brown/Blonde/BF/SF Bassman's, Dual Showman's and Tremolux's sound pretty "Fendery" to me.

I tend to disagree. I've never been a fan of closed cab Fender thing. Specially the way most guys use 'em(Way too much bottom. Muddies up the band mix).

+1 My experience as well. The reissue Jensens are fine speakers overall. Webers are good, but overrated IMO. :hank

Tend to agree with you on the amount of bottom with Bandmasters and Bassmans. My blonde Tremolux amps do sound Fendery at lower volumes, and can sound Marshally when cranked! Maybe it's the 10" speakers, or what you can do with the tone controls on these puppies? :hank

And this is why these threads are all over the place.

With due respect -

I'm not into head/cab setups like I used to be, but when I played Fender head/cab's they (for the most part) behaved and sounded like a Fender amp. Dick Dale and Brian Setzer sound like they're playing Fender amps, so I'll assume it wasn't just me.

I liked the reissue Jensen alnico 10's with the few amps that had them and I'd be happy to leave them well enough alone, but I much preferred the Eminence blue alnico 10's in both the reissue Bassman & Vibro King when A/B'ing the two speakers. For the ceramics I can't remember if I had a preference?

If anything I find my Weber ceramic 10's to be on the dark side, but I remember them being a stiff sounding speaker when they were new. It was probably a good 40 to 50 "band volume" hours on the Webers before they started to open up.

Those were my favored alnico 10's as well and the closest modern to an original CTS alnico 10 that I tried...prior ti Weber starting up a ways back. But I also only liked these as 3x10 and 4x10, not in a 2x10 Vibrolux or Tweed Super.
