I've had my R8 plaintop for a few weeks now - yeah, it's as good as everyone here said it would be - better really.

Fact is, it puts my former #1 '56 GT to shame - in spades - I don't even want to play it anymore. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is about the R8 - it rocks - I even sound better on it.

Q: The '56 is a 1996 model - are the 01's made to the same standards as the R8's and R9's - pore filled finish, long tenon, lighter tailpiece.

I used to love the '56, now it just doesn't measure up...

thanks,
strictly:)spin

The new '56's I've seen have the lower frets, new inlays, and light tail. They still are using that sticky lacquer on the Goldtops, that would be the main difference.

Apples & oranges, yes - but it's still a Les Paul!

Thanks for the responses - if it starts to bother me enough, I may
try to track one down...

Maybe you just prefer the humbucker sound to the P90's.

On the other hand, it could be just that you will warm to the '56 again after playing the '58 a while and decide you like them both equally for their different sounds. For that reason, don't do anything rash like selling the '56 as you may regret it (unless it's to me for $100...) Keep them both for a while and then decide.

If it's the stickiness of the Goldtop, trust me, it goes, give it another two months or so... :)

Unfortunately, that lovely chocolate smell goes as well. Can't have everything, I suppose...

Sean, if you like that chocolate smell tha tmuch, give Goldie some candy!
I'm absolutely CERTAIN you'll find SOME way to explain it to Mandy.

Good advice all - I briefly considered selling it, but it would have been replaced by an 01 '56. Doesn't sound as if there's enough of a difference between the years to warrant that - a '57 would be nice...;)

Aw, C'mon, Sean, I'm sure she'd like some sweets from her sweet every now and again!
