Does anybody have any idea what updates gibson might be making to its R8's and R9's for 2002?When does the new years product usually come out?And ,in your opinion ,will the 2001 leftovers drop significantly in price when the new 2002 models come out?
Basically, should I buy an R8 so late in the year?

I don't know about next years models but historic prices in general are lower than I have ever seen, especially used or NOS. I guess they can always drop but they seem pretty low right now.

many many Historics have been produced, so prices go down, normal thing...
...absolutely great, but many many...

I bought my R8 two months ago for $2750 and had my pick of 8 or so to choose from. I was digging up boxed historic's in the stores warehouse like a kis at Christmas! The price drop allowed me to buy a guitar I could only dream about owning as little as 6 months ago....

I am wondering about Gibson running a few Historics produced through the assembly line just as the originals did....i.e. no computer and machine carving of the tops and cnc'd pickup routing etc. Paf Pickups would be wound on the same winding machine as the originals. Essentially an all handmade piece. I would suppose in Limited numbers, there would be a great demand for such an instrument. Any thoughts?

There are plenty of replicas out there that are built like the specs
are layed out, but people turn their noses up at them because they are not genuine Gibson.

fl-799,

just put in a set of moded Antiquities with Gibson's alnico V and your guitar will go from "exellent" to "stunning"
...and it is a very good new that prices go down, even if i theorically loose some investment , but the original concept (back in the 50's) of LP sunburst was a good and affordable guitar... so it is a little more now... GREAT !

anyway i'll keep my 99 Historic, stunning tone, feel and look.

enjoy !

Toni,

I've already done the Antiquity and Seth Lover route in other Les Pauls....I went for a Fralin Bridge PAF 9K and my favorite Duncan '59 nickle cover in the neck in my Historic. I found my tone!

The funny thing is that the '57 classics I took out stink. I bought a super sweet Heritage 535 with the new updated Schaller Alnico-2 pickups a few days ago...I figured that the '57 classics would be a good match for the Heritage. WRONG! The Schallers killed the '57 classics tone wise if you can believe that. The tone went from shimmering fat tone to thin and flat sounding with no character. I could not stand it any longer....I spent another 2 hours putting the Schallers back in the heritage...no easy feat on a 335 style body. The dealer I bought the Hertiage from told me that the updated Schaller PAF's were a perfect match for the tone of the 535 body and I would have to agree. Even the Duncan '59 and Seth Lover equipped Heritage guitars I played sounded close to the "base" Schaller PAF but no better imo....very interesting indeed.

toni,

Cool. I am going to try the Alnico V this week. I may email you for help. One thing that jumps out for me is magnet direction and also do I get a brand new P-90 or do I get an old one?

Toni,

I think the results of putting the Alnico 5 in a Seth Lover or Antiquity would essentially make a Duncan '59 which already has the Alnico 5. Does this sound right? Becides the magnets, these 3 pickups are pretty close in terms of construction and materials.

Does anyone have any ideas on modding '57 classics....There has got to be a way to make these things sound better....perhaps a rewind?
