• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Trying to figure out the combination of features, but as it's a signature model, he probably spec'd it this way as a nod to his 70's gear..(the numbered Deluxes)

Gibson came out with the numbered series about ten years ago I believe. What is different about this one?

Cool guitar - have played one. The one I played was in the LPC weight class. The middle Dimarz pup can be dialed in with the other pups for many blended tones. Sounds very good to me. Check out the inlay on the first position.

The guitar players of the 60s seemed to love the three pickup design as well as the gawdy Bigsbys. There just wasn't enough stuff to add on to a guitar. Minimalism did not exist then.

But Pete didn't start playing three pickup Les Pauls until 1976.

I'd say Pete's subsequent embrace of two humbucker Schecter Telecasters was that former art student's embrace of a minimalist aesthetic.

From The Who's Official Website:

"The guitar sounded great at rehearsals and tests done this week. But in concert, it didn't have the sustain or flexibility of the Fenders. It lasted only until the synthesizer-break portion of the song, and Pete called for Alan Rogan to swap it out for his regular Fender Stratocaster. And so, we may not see a Les Paul onstage again, as it just didn't have the strength of the Fenders, and seemed to be much harder to play. It was a brief nod to history, and Pete is always trying things to change and improve – rather than be complacent. Those into gear may have remembered other efforts to get new/old sounds in the recent past; a return to Hiwatt Amps and Gibson P90 pickups were tried for a bit, but which didn't work either."

Hard to be certain, but it looks like an old Norlin-type "pancake" body in that photo..Let's hope not as those were awful and weighed a ton

It is indeed a pancake body. Very much feels like a real 70s era guitar and yes it's heavy - some as high as 10 lbs.
