Pawn Shop Purchase - Marshall Experts Needed

OK, so I went to see my dad today and decided to stop into a pawn shop in his city.

They had a bunch of Marshall gear tagged at $2000. I asked what the best they could do was and it was $1400 out the door.

Everything works, which is good, and I'm thinking this could be my backup rig for the summer, possibly. I have no idea what the amp is, but it is made in England and weighs about 60 lbs. It seems to be of a very high quality.

One box is a multi-FX unit or something that works, but it's probably not something I want to use. One is a 9000 preamp, which IIRC was part of the Valvestate series and I will sell.

The cabinet I have no idea about. It is called a 1960HW but seems to be a reissue but weighs a ton and may be smaller than the early 70s B cab that I really love.

If I had to guess I would put all of this stuff at the early/mid 1990s because it kind of reminds me of my friend's JCM-900 when we used to play together (I think he is a member here) and (2) I can't imagine a Marshall rack in recent years.

My questions:

1- Did I get taken (I have seven days to return)?

2- Anyone know about these things?

The cab is nice. Fun to have, but you can't really play them anywhere as they were designed to be played. That's 1000 street price used. They're on reverb over 1500.
That's a re-issue '60s basketweave with 25 watt greenbacks. Great cab.

the rest? meh.

IMO you did well.

A new 1960HW retails for that price and are good quality birch usually all GreenBacks... and this one looks to be in good shape.

Similarly, the EL34 can fetch that price alone, to the right buyer.

So, the 9000 and JFX-1, probably $100 rock-bottom each, perhaps more...

So assume the cab is all good, broken in with zeros issues, worst case you got everthying else for free.

Rougher times meet need to move, opportunity to score. They needed the cash, the space, and hard to find buyers for the specific things.

I hooked everything up. I have to say it sounds as good as my 100-watt JMP, which I have to say I'm not crazy about. I think it's 1979. I actually think this sounds better.

The good news is the amp is nice. It's two 100-watt power amps in one box. I like this because it can be run to two cabs, and one can be a backup - very cool. At home you have to be careful because if the cab is connected to A and B is turned on - no mas!

The preamp probably is worth nothing, but it does that 800 series thing for sure. It was a little scratchy but some deoxit inside and on the sockets cleaned it right up.

The JFX-1 lit up in the store but doesn't seem to see any input. I did a reset and changed the battery. The amperage on the adapter I have is a little low, so maybe that's the problem. I havr no idea and it's probably not worth fixing.

I'm probably going to sell everything but the power amp. Hopefully, I can find someone to buy it all in one shot. This amp, I think, will be very good live.

Well, I sold the FX and the preamp for $400, so I have 1k into the cab and the amp. I'm on the fence on keeping the amp, but I'm going to try to see how I could integrate it into my live rig. It may be a good amp for a backup because I could put it in a rack.

The cab sounds a lot tighter than my old 1970s one, so it's a good contrast I think. I want to try them together.

I would have kept everything, I like Marshall. Keeping the amp & cab is the most practical and the more desirable.
Good score!

The only preamp I own is an old Digitech Twin Tube that I use once in a while for different sounds, as it's very unique. The Marshall 9000 does sound very good. I saw there are two versions. One uses a 15v wall wart and the one I sold uses regular AC with big filter caps, etc. inside. It def did the JMP/800 thing to my ears (not my fav sound but still...).

I think Soldano does a new preamp and I use one of their heads live since about 97, so maybe I'll grab one of those. I may just try to sell the amp and have the cab. I had a 900 cab for years that I really liked but I sold it. I have a 72 or 73 Marshall cab I bought for $500 @ GC. It has three original speakers, which are greenbacks with grey covers, and one newer one. This cab may actually sound better, so maybe I'll sell that one and keep this one.

You have the 9001 preamp. It has tubes. It is pretty good too. I never compared one to a JMP-1 to see if either was much better than the other. There was also the 9004 which was solid state.

I sold the 9001 and the FX processor already. I have a JMP head, and I think this preamp sounded better given the choice between the two. I don't use my JMP head much at all, but once in a while, I will work with someone who wants me to use a Marshall, so it's the one I have.

I have this cab that I paid $500 for at GC. It was tagged '80s Marshall Cabinet' a few years ago. It has three original speakers and one reissue. It's a nice sounding cabinet. I may like this new one better. I have to do a shootout.

This one is the best-sounding one I own. It has EV speakers in it as well as a lot of miles. It's in my storage because it's very heavy and very loud. It needs to be re-tolexed, though.

Well, I ended up selling the power amp for $850. I probably could have held out for more. The cab I think I'm going to keep, and now I only have about $125 or so into it.

Today I am Mr. 355 :P

Dang, I wish I knew you were selling the amp too. I would have given more for it.

It weighed a ton and the last couple times I've sold on Reverb and eBay there have been 'partial refund' ransom-type non-issue complaints. I'm just trading stuff in or selling on FB now.
