• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

You are not joking, it looks like the entire corner wall has been rebuilt - note the row of 'header' bricks at head height on the Koss photo.

Yea I noticed that too, even around the window, the bonding looks like it was built that way. Nice touch to replace the corner stone to keep the wagon wheels off the brickwork :rofl

Another recording studio with photos of Koss playing his les paul through a marshall stack in the grounds outside.."Sawmill Studios" in GOLANT ..Cornwall...and pictures of him and the rest of the band "Back street crawler" walking along the railway line ..this is a fantastic area ,,as the studio is in a valley on the shores of the river Fal hidden away in a cove and can only be reached by a boat or risk walking along the railway [which is what i do]...the story has it ,that koss wired up some speakers in the trees and blasted away ..you could here is guitar all through the valley ..untill the local farmers complained to the police!!

look...as a kossoff fan since the first time i heard 'all right now' about 70-71 or so on am radio to the time that koss' passed away on a plane flight across the united states, i've been defensive of koss' and the horrendous things that apparently were done to paul kossoff plus the slandering which has taken place surrounding his death.

paul had folks taking advantage of him as his health decline and addiction to powerful barbiturates continued to his eventual death.

his problems were not ONLY drug related, there were other health issues going on,the likes of which are up to debate.

sorry if i came off as overly defensive of koss'.

That's all right jcs. I too am defensive of Koss. I'm also defensive of Janis Joplin, and Hendrix too. Well to tell the truth, if anybody says something bad about somebody I like (musician wise, or as a friend) I get very defensive.

As Free tribute bands go they dont come much closer than this, not to mention Slesser and Simon Kirke guesting from time to time, the guitar players called John Buckton, I think he's nailed the Koss vibe pretty well, but as this thread's not about Free wannabee's, lets stick with discussing the real deal, Mr Kossoff !!!!.....FRANK

I for sure won't disagree. Paul Kossoff helped me learn how to play and feel guitar immensely. I wish the newer generation of guitar players today would still want to learn how to express themselves that way. At least, as a starting point.

But I digress. A sign of my age.

Cheers,

SD

I'm 32. Paul has a lot of influence on my playing...

you can hear some of it on our demo... I spread the gospel of Kossoff to people around me all the time.

www.myspace.com/theinbetweenoc

He is one of the most important guitar players in history to me.

I feel through his playing i have gotten to know him and it makes me miss him dearly at times.

Paul is also one big reason I cleaned up a few years ago.

these guys get a lot right for sure, but slash and howard leese not in the same building sorry imo

still theres a tendency imo for too much noodling around and the vibrato is not as consistent as koss.

koss understands what the term 'rest' means in written music ( i played in band/classical music in school its something you learn or you are severely scolded!!).

too many naturally talented guitarists still need work in this respect.

another guy that did a good job with koss' style was wally stocker with 'the babys' particularly the 1st 2 records..

stocker seemed to have more of a feel for restraint..

That guy in 'The Babys" was good if I recall. Was that John Waites band? A friend had both those albums - was one called 'Head First'? I was wondering what happened to the guitarist in that group for years. He was very cool and understated with great tone and feeling. I was in a covers band that did some of their songs and I loved his playing so I guess he was an influence. Thanks for the reminder, jcs.

Hey, DH - I've seen that guy before in a London based covers band and he is an awesome player. I think they did a lot of Free stuff the times I saw them and he gets pretty damn' close.:)

:bigal The guy fucking NAILS The Stealer. Noodling and no restraint? Yes, he isn't Koss, but shit, he gets closer than ANYONE else I've heard. I wouldn't want to rip Koss' style to the point of not having any of my own style if I was that guy anyway, so hats off to 'im I say.

DHBucker, yeah i listened again maybe i was a bit hard on the guy.

frazettafan, the first babys was self titled i think, the 2nd was 'broken heart' ( i need to dig out those records),i remember seeing the babys open for alice cooper,,,wally stocker was great..

later i think wally stocker played with rod stewart briefly, really tasteful playing, not a koss' copier by any means but i suspect he could easily do the koss clone thing without too much trouble (not that he would).

Frank, with respect I did start this thread!!:ha , yes it is about Kossoff, and Free rip off bands isn't fair exactly. I thank those who listened without prejudice to the clips. I think the guy puts enough of his own style in things. It's just when he plays those Koss chords, I get the feeling!!
We now return to our regularly scheduled programming..:applaude :lol

Awesome Frank, Merry Christmas to you to mate. I lived in Wembley from when I was 11 years old in 1966 until '72 when I graduated US dependents high school there, went back to the states, returned to England in the mid seventies until 1982. I grew up hearing Free on the BBC's John Peel's radio show and I taped it off the radio with my Phillips cassette. I've got the first few Free albums on original vinyl. Loved Kossoff back then. I was engaged to a nanny from Carlisle when I was back in London in the late seventies and spent some time up north.
I am amazed that John gets such a close tone with the DR201 Hiwatt, that amp kills! Cheers yngwie308

I love these Koss quotes from the story, which is finished at the bottom of the page.

[I was playing Free’s Heartbreaker (showing off because I’d learned it without him showing me), and he pulled a face at me. When I asked why he said something like: “If you touched your girlfriend like that she’d smack you one.” Which confused me. “Stop trying to play it.” He said next, which confused me even more, then as he played it (about a million times better than I had) he told me: “Feel it, don’t play it. Imagine your guitar is a beautiful girl. Stroke her neck, feel her, love her.” I learned a lot that night.]
