• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

P90 or Mini Humbuckers?

I have a 2016 LP Tribute T (490R and 498T) that I would like to change the pickups. Which humbucker sized P90's do you guys recommend for a glassy lower gain (most of the time), rounded, articulate tone? I'm a fan of mini-hums as well. Would they be a better choice, would it major undertaking to fit a couple, and what are the best choices? Also, should I consider changing out/upgrading the PCB or leave it as is?

P90s for sure. I grew up playing a Les Paul Deluxe with Mini humbuckers and they just never got the big Les Paul sound that a full sized humbucker does. P90s are awesome - lots of humbucker sized options. Start here: https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/humbucker-sized-p-90-review-roundup

Alternatively, there SO many different regular sized humbuckers out there that you might find the “glassy lower gain (most of the time), rounded, articulate tone” you seek.

As for the PCB, make your life easier and pull that. If you can solder, you can make your own harness, or if you’re not, there are lots of people who make pre-made harnesses (although, if someone doesn’t know how to solder, how do you install a pre-made harness???)
it won’t make any difference in your tone, but it will make swapping pickups and pots out a helluva lot easier.

Thanks for the link! I'm leaning towards the Fralins.

I recently picked up a 2013 Les Paul Traditional ('57 Classics) that covers those humbucker tones territory very well. I'm changing out the LP Tribute's buckers to have the cool LP/P90 tones covered as well.

Check. Thanks for the excellent advice!

Dimarzio Tone Zone P90 is fantastic and checks most of your boxes. It's high output but doesn't have the typical muddiness of some HO pups.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I've decided on the Duncan Phat Cats. So far, so good!
