All of this is SO cool. Thanks for a great post, 1fastdog!

When I was a teenager in the 60s, I saw the Candymen at least once at the West Point Teen Club in West Point, Ga ( around 80 miles or so southwest of Atlanta. ) Loved 'em. Lotsa great bands from Atlanta ( like Hampton Grease Band ) and other places in the Southeast played there. I would stand up by the bandstand for hours watching the guitar players and absorbing everything I could. Saw quite a few 'Bursts parade through. Magical times, for sure. You know exactly what I'm talking about.
A cousin of mine who was an outstanding bass player in bands during those days once told me a very funny story involving one of the members of the Candymen, John Lennon, and a bathroom in England. This would've happened when the Beatles were no longer the opening act.

Speaking of the ARS, and the West Point Teen Club ---- saw the Bushmen there many times, whose bass player was Rodney Mills who, as you undoubtedly know, went on to produce some of the ARS recordings.

I'm picking that that was the Big Os biggest hit?

May be a coincidence that it was written at that time.........'64 wasn't it?

Thanks for the reply! Rodney Mills, Hampton Grease Band < haven't thought about them in a while >. Seeing 'bursts on a regular basis, absolutely. I had a few and knew a good number of others who did also. I really liked gigging in Atlanta back then. Cooley's, C.W. Shaw's in Buckhead, Uncle Tom's in Stone Mountain. Hell, you could even kick hard in the Underground before it became a tourist trap...

Have you ever caught Barry Richman? Nice Atlanta area plank spanker and has been around for quites awhile..: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfQPIiz0tOE&feature=related

Excellent stories and photos! I saw ARS a few times in the '70's. Always enjoyed them.
So, which part of the band was in "The Classics IV"?

My friend Rodney Justo has been singing for years. He was in groups in my area, they then became the Candymen as Roy Orbison's backup band, then several of the same band mates became the Atlanta Rhythm section. Rodney sang on their first album and is now back with them touring.

Rodney told me that in 1963 they went to England with Roy. While there Jim Marshall gave some of his amps to the band. Rodney also mentioned the Beatles were their opening act at a few of the shows. Roy Orbison gave this Marshall to the Barry, who later played for Roy and went on to ATlanta Rhythm Section. Barry still has the amp, so this is one of the first Marshalls to come to the US, enjoy:

First of all - Those are my photographs! Second of all, Barry passed away and left me The Marshall. It is the FIRST Marshall in America!

Great! If the amp was actually a gift from Marshall, that was unusual from what we've been told.

Is it known to be on any records? I think "Mean Woman Blues" came out right after that British tour!

Loved Roy, unique and brilliant artist and performer right up to the end. And of course he lives on. Glad the bandmates and amp do too.
Barry used this amp on the last ARS album he played on - Partially Unplugged.

I really don't know if Jim gave amps away much or not. It seems thay had a good relationship over the years as Roy arranged for Barry and Paul Goddard to get 100 watt heads, one being a bass model, and 4 4x12 cabs each... maybe Roy bought the later rounds.

It's my understanding the Candymen Marshalls were stored for several years in Dothan, AL. This stuff was quite a long time ago. Barry's amp, as I said was Roy's... according to Rodney and from the original batch.
I take possession on September 15. Then... find a museum.

JR Cobb and Dean Daughtry. I think Robert Nix was in the band for a while.

Hey Gang - After much research here's the story... The amp is a 1965 Marshall Model 1961 JTM45 212 Super Tremolo Mk IV. It was inspected by Hime Amplification and Peter Stroud. Under the handmade chassis is the handwritten number 8. The date code on the components is 4th quarter 1964. It was given to Roy by Jim Marshall in London in March of 1965. There are photos on stage in Paris with the amp right behind Roy.

Barry used it on Mylon Lefebvre's album and Barry's last ARS album, Truth In A Structured Form.

Roy/Barry's Marshall is now on display at the Rock Hall of Fame. Go see it.

Thank you all for your interest and comments.

Hey Gang - About that Marshall… Back in the 80s I was a roadie for The Atlanta Rhythm Section, and this is the story that Barry Bailey told me…

In 1965, Barry was in The Candymen. Roy booked a European Tour, but because Barry was 17 he couldn’t get a work visa, so Roy re-hired John Rainey Adkins to play guitar. While in London, Jim Marshall gave this amp to Roy. Roy sold it to JRA, who sold it to Barry. Barry passed away a few years ago and left me the amp in his will. It is now in the Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and will go to auction in 2027.

What a cool amp with a great history. Where will it be going to auction at?
