• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I was at my local shop and the owner said he had something for me to look at. Pulled out a really nice goldtop R6 that was made in 2001. He told me that it was a special run that was aged (parts only) and I noticed that it had grover tuners instead of the Kluson type. Had a neck like a baseball bat (good stuff) and the COA.

Obviously pre VOS...so anyone seen one and can verify it was a limited run. I guess the grovers are really throwing me off, as well as the aged parts. May be standard issue but I recall them all having klusons. Thanks!

Sounds like a "custom authentic" option on that guitar (lightly aged parts, dulled finish & Grovers) -- :hmm

OK thanks. I'm just not hip to all the different "options" on Gibson's newer products. So this is nothing rare/limited run? Pretty common guitar?

I wouldn't consider it rare to a point that it adds additional value, if at all rare. It's worth what any "in-similar-condition" R6 might be worth, IMO.

I would say that if you like, go for it! (I've gotta faciliate you, don't I?) :dude:

"Special run" is also an exaggeration. Grovers were used on the custom authentics in mid-late '01. Gibson then switched back to the Klusons in '02. If you dig Grovers and want a goldtop with them stock, these are fairly rare.

Actaully the guitar was nice but not something I'd be interested in paying $2700 (used). The owner said it was one of aprox. 300 R6s made with this option and was really hyping it as a rare piece. I'm asking only to be an educated consumer for future reference. Thanks for clearing this up.

I guess I'm going to play devils advocate and say the guitar is actually a little rare. There were only three models of Custom Authentics with Grovers, the '56 Goldtop, '58 Standard, and the '68 Custom. They only came with Grovers from roughly July 2001 to about Jan 2002. There's no way anyone (other then Gibson) know how many were produced, but I would bet (according to my data) that only a couple hundred of each model were made.

Lets just say that if you wanted one, you couldn't just go out and grab one anywhere... like you could a regular R6.

Rare or not, unless it's a killer-diller tone machine, $2,700 is way too much for a used R6. If you paid that much you'd be hard pressed to get close to your money back when you decide to sell. I'd get interested at around $2K FWIW.

Well, the point that there are fewer of the Grovered ones around does help the price a little.
Assuming two guitars that are exactly the same, I would be willing to spend a few hundred more on the one with factory Grovers. I like the looks, tuning accuracy, and sound difference that Grovers offer.

I have one of these R6 CAs from 2001 and it's a really great guitar! I'm not usng it much these days as I prefer my two Murphy-aged R9s, but that's a completely 'nuther story. I bought mine new as NOS in July and only paid $2600 for it then. The asking price of $2700 used is completely out of the question. I'd offer no more than $1900 if you're serious about buying it. You can buy a new VOS R6 for @ $2400 and there's nothing that makes the CAs that special. Just my $.02.
