Would appreciate any recommendations for a tube amp that can be played at "bedroom" levels.

A Fender Superchamp.

Those things are a hoot around the house.

High gain tones are a little buzzy, but not too bad.

The clean tone is ok.

I really liked the mild OD tone on it, very cool.

The reverb is nice, but only has two settings. Light and mine shaft.

I had zero luck trying to gig with one.

Regards,

Brian

Peavey Classic 30 is nice for around the house playing, not too big. It has reverb and channel switching as well. They aren't too expensive, either. A friend of mine even gigs with them, so they have enough power for that, too

I've got both SuperChamps and a Crate V1512.

IMO The SuperChamp is great but needs to be plugged into a nice 12" speaker to sound better (it has a 10"). The reverb is powered by the lead channel tube and therefore you get almost no reverb when using the lead channel.

The Crate does mild to wild very well for a $400 amp. It has killer classic rock tones (think AC/DC and more). You can add any amount of reverb to any gain level you want. Some people have upgraded the speaker in theirs but I'm happy with the 12" it comes with. Is it a Bogner, Matchless, or Blockhead? No! But is a pretty great inexpensive, small-wattage, classic rock tube amp.

Do a search for Crate V1512 and you should come up with more info.

Either the Peavey Classic 30 or any of the Crate VC series. I have a VC20R that's just a little screamer. If I'm feeling lazy and don't want to haul the Two Rock I'll take the Crate to rehearsal and it'll keep up pretty well.

If you have chance,check THD Univalve. It`s got attenuator built in and also you can change tubes without rebiasing it. And the sound is really good.

The Smicz TAD tube adaptors will bring you down to 2-3 watts and run about $100, not a bad idea.

Replacing the stock speaker in the Super Champ with the Electro Voice 10' sounds great.

Emery Superbaby, 8 watts , Emery Microbay, 2 watts;

Allen Class Act, 10 watts;

ADA Rocket 10 ,10 watts; ( Superb amp you can only get them used, because the company went out of business )

Carr Mercury , 8 watts;

These are all very good amps for recording and home use.

I use a Blackface VibroChamp with a Jensen reissue speaker and use a box in front for some more overdrive if needed. Sounds great for a low volume practice/ recording rig.

Ditto the Crate V15... Cheap, Class A, Clean to Hyper, Cheap, Low Volume to Kill Elephants. Good little studio amp too.

The THD Univalve is killer too, but not inexpensive and you'll need a cab.

Reverend Hellhound 40/60 Combo. It's a 1x12 that can get very freaking loud, but also sounds very good at low volumes. Also plenty o' power for gigging at even the 40 watt setting. One of my favorite amps.

Crate Vintage Club sounds great, but I have a love/hate relationship w/ mine. Sound=awesome reliability=horrible

if you're looking for something economical, crate vc508 and vintage 5 watters (silvertone, gibson, etc) can be had for $200 or less. i have a blues jr. and pro jr. and those are both too big for bedroom use in my opinion - you can't get the volume up enough to get a good sound without offending the next room.....but my silvertone 10xl is perfect....

My current round the house amp is a Tophat Portly Cadet.

Be warned that this thing must be cranked to give up the goods, and cranked = LOUD.

Still looking at getting a Weber C125 for it. This should make it louder.

:)

And a Mini MASS so I can play it around the house.

A cranked Portly with a FDII in comp cut mode in front is yielding some great tones but I say again, she's loud.

Brian
