The tone is described as 'a tele on steroids' without going into the minutiae of it all.
I've heard that description before and it's so true! The high end of a Tele has always been too thin for me, but the high end on this thing kicks!

I've read some good advice here from you folks and it's helped. I tend to keep the bridge pickup on 10 but I've turned the tone down to around 7. For the neck pickup, I turn the volume down to around 8 and keep the tone of 10. Amp adjustments of course, but it really helps balance the two pickups a lot.

That's why I like coming here and am not afraid to ask questions. You guys know your stuff!

In listening to Pete Thorns video of the SG, the sound of the lower strings is exactly what I'm getting from my SG. That "single coil" quality.

I didn't hear that quality with the Phil X video nor with Tom B's video either. Wonder what's different?

I really like how Tom B. plays. Love his chord work. I'd like to dig deeper into what he's doing.

I generally leave my bridge volume on 8, neck on 6, both tone controls on 10. It gives me more range to play with, and an always at my fingertips boost on the volume knob.

I like a particularly nasty and biting bridge tone, and the only time I really roll down my tone controls is when using octave pedals, or some fuzz pedals.

Thanks H&G! I appreciate the tips! Good to hear what others do and to give it a shot!

I'm a slightly different player (I assume) from most around here in that I play at church. Other than church I have no other guitar playing experience. But they like what I do and I get many compliments on my tone. Been going back and forth between my Epi SG Pro and my PRS SE 24 Standard. I won't be playing there for a good few weeks, have yet to use the SG Special so in the meantime I'm working on getting the tones just right. I mean, I'm playing for the Creator of the universe so I darn well better have my parts and tones dialed in!!!

I tend to use the middle position (clean tone) a lot because it fits so well with so many things there. But there are times there where I do use the bridge pickup and stomp on the Friedman Small Box or a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe! (I'm a 72 year old rocker at heart!). But I also work on my own thing at home which is more rock orientated. It's a good creative outlet for me. I'm retired and single so why not?

So I really want to get the SG Special dialed in before I use it at church. I'll tell ya, this guitar plays so darned good! A real dream for me! As said, I'm so use to the humbucker sound so I still have a bit of tone shaping to do.

Again, thanks to you and all for the tonal suggestions. You guys are the best!!!

That middle setting on P90 loaded Gibson has so many great tones hidden in its range depending on how you set the volume and tone knobs.

YES IT DO!
My favorite is to dime both volumes and roll a little off on one to get a bit more of the other.
And the more you roll off one, the more you get of the other.
I can stay on that middle position most of the night.

Indeed! Got my SG in my lap right now. Been working on tones and I'll tell ya, for some "church tones" using the middle position, adding the right kind and amount of reverb, a touch of delay and just a subtle touch of chorus......heavenly!
